Hey there,

my biggest problem at the moment is finding drum samples. Im into drum and bass/Trip Hop/Breaks and i "only" have ableton suite. i have the feeling that most of the drumsamples included not really "fit" to this genres. Everytime i try to build a drumkit i fail and feel really bad after that, having problems start my daw up on the next day...

I would love to hear how you do this stuff. Do you simply use Oneshots from Sample librarys? Do you process samples and layer them?

I know this sounds like a small problem, but its really bugging me and a huge problem for me... I dont even know why...

Thanks in advance!

Loopmasters is great. A great way of putting together a one-shot drum library is to collect one-shots from sample packs (duh) and loading loops into a sampler and cutting out individual hits and saving them. You can then get creative with EQing/layering hits to come up with your own samples. Or you could invest in a hardware drum machine and synthesize your own drums. The Roland TR-8 and Dave Smiths Tempest are 2 of the best out there though you would have to do a fair amount of layering & editing in you DAW to come up with decent sounding samples. Hope this helps.

Finding unprocessed single-shot samples of drum kits is easy. Making them sound good is the hard part. That's also true if you are in a studio and you have multi-track recorded a real drum kit. But with an extra hurdle: the real drum kit is played by a real drummer, but your samples are played by a sequencer and lacking the human feel.

Regarding the processing, what you usually need is effects like EQ, compression and some reverb on snare / toms.
