I hardly do any voice or live instrument recording but sometimes I need to do this and my mate is getting fed up with me borrowing his AKG mic. So it's time to buy my own.
I know nothing about this area, but am thinking of spending around £120. Any recommendations?
The crucial thing for me is clarity - I want crispness and no colouring.
Wanted - microphone mostly for voice

That's nice and cheap. Do I need a pop-shield with this type of mic? I've only ever used my own homemade versions (coathanger and tights) which never worked very well.

That's a joke I take it. What I meant was that I expect different mics to respond differently to plosives.
Digital village only has 1 pop shield it seems. £45!? Rather pricey it seems.

Sm57 is very coloured! The purpose of this mic is to give presence boost.
The most crisp and clear sound microphone are FET and tube mics. This is not always true with some exception. Groove Tube make a good budget FET mic to get you started. This will give you dynamic quality and high-end crispness.
I use sm57 for vocals almost all the time. Coloured is what a good engineer always wants in a microphone. You collect many microphones with a lot of color to give you a choice for different instruments.
Make sure you have a preamp with good gain! Sm57 needs a lot of gain on most well recorded vocals

Although I think that this mic is bloody awful for my piano, I think that the Behringer B-1 does a superb job on vocals. I also like it on acoustic guitar. The mic should be about 79 pounds, its 99 bucks here in the states. It has a nice upper end presence that compliments vocals well.

The only mic I've used has been an AKG of some kind. The problem I found with it was that my voice seemed to have too many harmonics in a grainy kind of way.
If anything, I want my voice to sound cold. Lifeless, even (!). Crystaline, pure, etc..

I'm rather fascinated by microphones, and more so now that there seem to be so many good budget ones. I have a Samson C1, a MXL 2001 and a Shure SM57. I want to get a Behringer and an Oktava. One day I'll love to do a little microphone shootout, as a resource for people like you who are looking for a decent, cheap mic to record vocals and instruments. That way you could hear the same voice recorded with all the mics and the same guitar, etc.

Here are my 2 cents... If you need a mic for studio vocals only, I'd stick with a condenser mic. Shure's SM57, SM58 and such are more for performance and do add colour. I use a Rode NT1A for my vocal recording and am happy with it. That should fall into your price range. Another option is the Studio Projects C1.
Depending on the AKG mic you've been using up until now, you may be a bit spoiled. I've recorded using a 414 and a C12, love both (a lot!), but can afford neither.
The Rode comes with a shock mount, but you will have to buy a pop screen separately.
