Well, lot of people are under impression that Big tick is doing something different, but it's still plugin hosting other plugin and controls.
Big Tick wrote:About the "intelligent" controls, for each control you can specify a min / max value, reverse mode, bipolar mode for knobs, step mode and toggle/momentary modes for buttons. You can define mappings that are global to a plugin, or customize them per patch.
Couldn't developer do the same with Automap API i.e. specify how and what to map?

By the way I have few unrelated questions:
1. If I would create DIY hardware controller one day, could I control plugins with it? And I want to avoid midi as much as possible and use something like Ethernet to transfer plugin data.

2. Novation lawyers, how do you avoid them :) ?
Murderous duck!

It is different, in a way, because there is no additional "(automap)" plugin created. You don't need to rescan in all your hosts. You just need to let VIP scan your plugins.

I don't know enough about Automap to answer that.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Controlling plugins with a DIY controller ? It depends on the plugin. Most expect MIDI anyway, sometimes OSC.

Ask Akai, not me.... I only write code, man :)

Any rumors on release date?

I'm actually very interested in this for plugin control. This should pick up where the Push control has left off for me (and Komplete can be included here too). I want to pick up the 25 key controller since I already have an 88 keyboard that I don't want to replace.

Shortly after NAMM....

Nice!

If anyone is attending NAMM and gets some hands-on time with one of these keyboards, I'd love to know how the build quality stands up.

Akai did a great job partnering up Ableton for the Push controller, and I'm hoping the encoders/buttons are very similar. The housing looks like plastic, but I'm not worried about that.

The more I think about this, the more I wish they would release a non-keyboard version with more encoders.

I really don't care about the keyboard.

Novation has been there already in earlier versions, but has changed paradigm?

I mean if system is system open so not only akai controllers but also diy controllers could work with it?

The problem I had with Novation Automap was that wrapping created a second version of the plugin, and you had to pay attention to which one you launched. At one point it became a pain so I deleted all the Automap versions. Then some time later I tried to open a project and it choked because it couldn't find the Automap versions of the plugs I had used. It's nice if you can avoid this extra step, or that if it still happens, it's invisible to your DAW.

Does VIP work with plugin effects as well as instruments?

Not in the initial version. Effects are very high on the features list for updates, but they do require some thought about how this is going to work. For example a browser for effects, would need to have different tags than the instruments browser.

Shortly after namm doesn't seem likely, more like shortly after messe. It's already April, n still no shops selling these yet. I'm hearing time frames as long as June 2015' I'll be picking one up ASAP for a review.

You made my day Big Tick. Can't wait !

In my opinion it only gets really interesting when they support vst effects. So that you can save a piano with a certain delay effect as a preset. That's usual when you use workstations like Yamaha's Motif.
