Windows integrated firewall.
Firewalls somehow got out of fashion, didn't they? I used to use ZoneAlarm, and some other firewall i forgot the name off, and mostly it was a pain in the ass to configure. Considering AV programs are rather recommended these days, i'd think the Windows firewall should be enough. Especially when accessing the internet via a router which already has an integrated firewall.

I use Comodo and its never really been an issue apart from not playing nice with Avira (since switched to Panda). The most recent update did require me to recreate a lot of old exceptions again but once they're done they're done. I tried Windows defender and found it had this thing of just quarantining legitimate processes it considered suspicious without giving me any chance to say otherwise, makes me wary of using Windows Firewall for the same reasons.
Don't use the full Comodo Security Suite (with AV) though since it cains off CPU and significantly slows down your machine, just the plain old firewall will do it with your own choice of AV.
Not that i claim to be an expert on these things, somewhere higher than the average consumer though.

I used the one from ESET, which worked fine for me. I never renewed, and am using Windows Firewall without any major issues.

Preventive measures.
I understand you may think that by only visiting legitimate sites you may feel safe; however, can you say "Target"?
Hackers and other illegitimate persons will find a way in so why make it easy for them?

Thanks for the recommendations, I think I had found a few in another thread, I've been offline for a while.

This is quite a comprehensive article.
It's more than you're asking for but you may realize what a firewall really is : almost useless unless you learn how to use it to its max and still... not enough.

I like TinyWall and it seems to offer enough protection for me.

In addition to the firewall recommendations above, also consider Emisoft Anti-Malware and HitmanPro additionally.
Nothing can stop all the nasty code programs visiting your computer, and the businessmen gangsters / government agencies will naturally always find new ways to exploit you.
But currently a combination of the above works well for me.
Then again, I'll probably take myself of the internet in a couple of years the way things are going.

Really? I use the COMODO Internet Security Premium (with the AV inactivated because I use a better program for AV), and it doesn't slow down my computer significantly (besides the firewall I appreciate the automatic sandbox). I tried to buy Ad-Aware Pro a few times but this damn UpClick service doesn't work and I cannot pay, I reported it to Ad-Aware, and the answer was...nothing...mutantdog wrote:Don't use the full Comodo Security Suite (with AV) though since it cains off CPU and significantly slows down your machine, just the plain old firewall will do it with your own choice of AV.
