Hey good to have you on here. And don't worry every musician/artist was musically incompetent at some point in their life. The idea is to keep growing. The things that should get you up and running in my opinion are as follows:
1) a decent computer/laptop
2) a soundcard/audio interface
3) studio monitor speakers
4) controller keyboard
5) a Digital Audio Workstation
6) enroll in music theory & composition classes online or at a college

- berklee school of music has some great online courses
- sweetwater.com is a great place to buy gear from. you can find everything I listed on there

Good Luck!

Heya mate thanks for the reply..
i purchased a ddj-sx pioneer midi controller which came with an audio interface and new speakers, already got a pretty decent laptop, been practicing mixing but downloaded Lmms to have a go at actual music production...
is that a decent daw for a beginner?

Many thanks

Welcome to KVR, Panigiri. :tu:

What makes a DAW decent is does it compliment your work methods and does it do what you want and need from it.

Today's DAWs are pretty much the same and basically, they are all decent.

LMMS is a full feature DAW so it should be good for you needs. Try it to find out if it's what you need.

The biggest favor you can do for yourself is to demo things. It's the only way you will learn if a piece of software is good for you.

Try out several and find the one for you. But once you do find it, stay with it and learn all the ins and outs. Then it will serve you well. This is true for DAWs and any other software you may download.

Good luck!

Happy Musiking!

LMMS is a decent DAW, especially for beginners, but you'll need some VSTi synths and VST effects because the on-board synths in LMMS are extremely basic and rather aimed at making chiptunes...

Regarding free DAWs, you could also check Podium Free...

If you want to invest a bit of money, Mixcraft or MuLab are pretty easy to use. If you want to customize everything for the rest of your life, try REAPER...

Yes, there are many, many good free plugins. Do not worry about spending your money to buy plugins first time. Try to understand for what they are used, which types they are etc. And if you would be ready to invest in something it could be better to spend your money to buy good DAW (Reaper, MuLab etc.). I've never used LMMS so I can say nothing about it.

Try to search here: http://www.kvraudio.com/q.php. Use tags, e. g. "Pricing" - "Free". Types of the plugins... It's a very complicated theme :?

Look at this site with the info about the new free plugins, samples etc.: http://bedroomproducersblog.com/
