"fractal waveform"
I thought I had an original idea "fractal waveform" but Google proved me wrong. Can Mandelbrot set fractals be tweaked so to be viewed as a waveform and be used as a sound source?

Is there a VSTi that generated a fractal waveform and allows you to change the parameters in real time? Add a second fractal waveform? Add modulation and away we go!

Since fractals have an infinite detail this could create very thick warm sound? Just wondering.
Looked further and found this with an OP similar to this:

Forgive me for posting if this has already been discussed at KVR.

Well, in terms of audio "infinite" tops out at about 20khz, and that's kind of a "I'm 12 and I was raised in a pillow store" kind of spec. So... there are plenty of ways to get rich waveforms and check out U-he's Bazille, I haven't played with it much but it has some sort of fractal osc.

I am thinking detail of the waveform within the 20khz
Second the fractal waveform to be used as the sound source and not to modulate. Is this what Bazille does?

Well, you could look at it as a fractal spectrum, or fractal evolution of a waveform over time.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

Didn't think of that. Yea, why not. Could be an additional way of coaxing some interesting sound out of it and lets hope it has a musical quality.

Fractal LFO would be interesting, say for filter cutoff - you might could even hear something of the pattern if it were long enough...

Nope, what is called "fractalize" in the Bazille oscillators is just a fancy name for "masked sync" so there's not even any fractals involved but just something they figured in a sense gave a fractal-like result. For anyone that cares: that means AM is used to "mask" the point where the theoretical slave oscillator is synced, though that's not always entirely true either as using certain waveforms for the so called "masking" will emphasise instead of "masking" it.

Actually, I think there is something like a fractal multi-stage envelope on Absynth, or a transformation to an existing envelope, something like that, adds a replica of existing envelope but smaller, I believe

Just randomly remembered: Galbanum has a category for fractal waveforms in his "Architecture Waveforms 2010" waveformset. If you ask him nicely perhaps he can help answer what's possible and what may come in the future of audio synthesis, and in what sense these waveforms are "fractal". I'm sure he's certainly geek enough to answer your questions and then some (offcourse I mean that in a good way and given he's got the time).

I believe sound waves and waveforms have a fractal quality however I was thinking that the Mandelbrot set fractals
https://www.google.com/search?q=Mandelb ... 3&ie=UTF-8
could be manipulated to somehow resemble a waveform with the goal of producing audio with a musical esthetic. The fractal waveform and its variants will be the sound source.

A little knowledge can be dangerous.
Just in case you are wondering who, I am talking about myself.

I have two approaches to generate 'fractal waveforms' in mind:

- Take fractal-generating function over strange attractor and sample successive iterations, which will be just oscillator samples.
- Generate frull fractal using iterative methods and cast it to one dimension, which will now be a waveform - potentially CPU-intensive.

Either way, difficulty is to define meaningful "frequency" to use fractals as musical oscillators.

...but this probably belongs to DSP and plugin development, not general discussions. :borg:

Gee, you know your fractals.

The OP was made more out of curiosity rather than a serious attempt to actually make a fractal waveform VSTi where the fractal is the sound source.

How about to fractalize any audio sample rather than create a new original waveform. In this case the waveform that has been converted to a 3D fractal you will hear variations as you move backwards and forward or up and down. So you will be able to deviate from the original waveform and the more so you do the less sound of the original you will hear.

Just thinking out laud again.

I downloaded a fractal waveform generator a while back, f**k knows where I found it, I have so many of these weird audio tools found around the edges of the web
