Do this rule:
- Any effect that transform the sounds to make them unrecognizable as being from the synth is not allowed.
means that i can't use effects like distortions or guitar amp emulators?
Distortion and amps are not specifically banned, but you need to use good judgement when using them. If you use them, please use them lightly as they tend to change the sound quite a bit.
Ok, this mean i can't "emulate" a full distorted, "power chords" guitar.
Thanks.

Sorry if this has already been covered, but have any Mac users tried using Plugwire to run Eclipsis?

It looks interesting, but somewhat complex to get set up.

Had some tests yesterday. Really nice for realistic instruments of all genres. Tricky for drum sounds (could share it in next 2 days, still in progress).
CPU feels nice, but it eats a lot of RAM.

Wow very clean, minimalistic interface, love these kind of guis. Wish you all a lot of creativity and fun (mac user here)!

btw, bj, any news about some more nuanced voting system (some optional extra categories)?

Go to the KVR-Downloads. There is a new preset bank, which has two distorted sounds. I think this could be a good basis for such sounds.
The hole bank is good with wonderfull pads too. Worth the download!

Hey people, I actually managed to run VST windows plugins in Wine for Mac OSX with NORMAL latency and 0 midi latency!

The only problem is now that the Eclipsis gui doesn't seem to work properly in Wine, it seems to use some kind of acceleration... But you can use the raw parameter view to edit presets.

Here is a quick manual:

1. Install Wine by kroneberg
http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/downloads , see below "wine 1.7xxx"
Place it in standard path ( /Applications )

Run it and create a "prefix", a Windows file structure.

2. Install Jack2 Audio for OSX:
http://jackaudio.org/downloads/

3. Download and install osxwineasio. Not sure if this step is really needed... Maybe latency is already good without it, didn't test it without.

Download wineasio.dll.so here: https://github.com/steveschow/osxwineasio/releases

Copy it to: /usr/local/lib/wine/

Then go to terminal and enter the following commands:

Code: Select all

cp wineasio.dll.so /usr/local/lib/wine/
ln -s /Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/include/wine /usr/local/include/wine
ln -s /Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/lib/wine /usr/local/lib/wine
PATH=$PATH:/Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/bin
wine regsvr32 wineasio.dll
4. Download and install vsthostx86:

Here: http://www.hermannseib.com/english/vsthost.htm
Move the folder to your Wine prefix dir, and in the prefix dir into "prefix/drive_c/Program Files/"

5. Setup midi in OSX midi settings.

Run OSX's Audio-/MIDI-setup app. In Midi studio double click "network" symbol. Create a new session named "local". Make is active and then connect to it.

6. Run vsthost in Wine and install eclipsis. Wine has a little symbol in the upper right corner, there click on "file manager". After a while the file manager appears. Go to c:/program files/vsthost and run vsthost.

Setup it with the following settings:
MIDI->Midi input device "local"
WAVE->Input none, Output "MME: Wine sound mapper", sample rate "44100", Buffer "525 samples"

Now put the eclipsis vst into a VST folder within the wine prefix, and scan all vsts in vsthost (you maybe need to select the path). My vsts are in C:/program files/vstplugins.

Select the eclipsis vst under file->plugins->.

7. Run your osx daw. Create a midi instrument with midi output "local". You should here now eclipsis with normal latency.

The gui of the plugin is somehow destroyed. You can open the parametric view in vsthost. Don't know if you can control all parameters with this view. Maybe somebody can manage to run the plugin gui in Wine properly?

Works fine here, there are several automation sources.

I couldn't automate any in ableton last night,i'll have a look again tonight

Started on a dark ambient/space drone style of track. The included preset bank has some good dark atmospheres to layer up.

Am going to check out the zOne preset bank as well to see if that has any great gems for dark ambience.

Wondering if anyone has any advice on a good glue compressor I can use (windows) that fits with the rules of the competition please?

thanks

This could turn into one of those fun all-the-plugins threads, because I suspect "glue" is more about how you use it than the plugin itself, but that said, TDR/VOS stuff seems to go over well here. TDR Kotelnikov seems to be their new hotness and includes an x64 version. If you're running 32-bit, Density MkIII is a safe bet that (I believe) has a usable glue preset.

Some kick I've managed to made so far, pretty weak, so compression/transient shaper could be useful.
Try playing with OSC3 octave, modulator octave, filter params.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Thanks for the links, have downloaded them and will see how they work out.

Folks that use ableton just wondering what dither option (if any) do you use on export audio?

Just created some quick drum patches: hope it can be helpful to someone. :)

They work better around C5 to F5

is there an init feature for the vst?

thanks for the drums.
