I liked your song! you know you had another 29 days after your entry to work on sound design as you were the first entry dont you :hihi: :Cheers :D

I haven't had time to listen to all the tracks yet since I'm busy with school and other projects but I'm really looking forward to it. Does anyone happen to know the total length of all the tracks in listening time. I know I added 10 minutes to it :hihi:

Nah, i was the second. :D

Back then it was nice coincidence. I've already done a couple of presets with Hive when the OSC was announced, so i can get to the songwriting fast.

Yeah, this is tricky... I basically have had zero inspiration as of late. So designing sounds for me is a way to try to come up with something that might spark the rest of a track. This time I had like 75 tracks of sounds... and 10 minutes of music... and I hated it all. And I found something and ended up scrapping all the music, deleting 2/3 of the sounds, and designing new ones to fit everything better anyway... so I have to second that: prioritize composition & arrangement, use sound design to compliment THAT rather than the other way around. You can obsess over a patch for days, but you can get one close in a few minutes. Which one helps get a track done faster? :scared:
lol, this sounds pretty similar to how I create tracks only its not a lack of inspiration. I go overboard in the creating leads department, up to 300 different melodies spread out in different projects, then having to go back and find all the best ones and arrange them on a playlist then stream so I can find it easy and if it fits in the mix as it then its golden. often though I have to go back and make some adjustments to it to fit in the mix. From there I'm usually left with an overkill of lead and pad parts to choose from, only in this case I kind of underestimated how much time I'd have for the track since I just started a new semester. By the time I got to finishing the kick and bass track layed out on the timeline, I had only 24 hours left. All the other parts were finished, drums, leads etc, but arranging them does take time and there was no way I could only introduce a lead or two into the track without adding all of them since how I had the melodies progress.

But yes I agree with you, next osc and other track I do its kick and bass track first, then add the simple drum track, then pads, then leads (a rough part, atleast know where the leads will be and how many leads are needed and for how long), then add in the more complex drum and percussion parts, then the fx. I found that if you fill out any track to heavily, ie drums, right at the get go its not always easy to right other parts for it that play at the same time. Same goes with pads that aren't just in the background, there has to be plenty of room far it so to speak so i'll be designing this in the mix. Cheers :tu:

^^^^^^^

I have found that patches sound better "in the mix" than simply standalone - e.g. my "piano-like" patches when you hear them alone, sound "sort of" like a piano - but once in the mix and a little EQ around it and the surrounding instrumentation, it starts to sound quite convincing. So, instead of going overboard making patches, I basically make a basic "raw" patch which is pretty close to what I want, then drop it into the mix and fine tune from there - and repeat, and repeat until the track has its full complement of sounds and is well cooked.

I often start with some pad like chords and stuff to get a rough layout of the track. Drop a little perc and bass into that and the leads and melodies/harmonies tend to drop out from there. Then, there's still the technical side of things and re-evaluation of patches etc etc. Do I need a break? If so, how do I move to that? Do I want a slower tempo (or faster tempo!) part? Again, how do I bridge those? And then there's the intro and outros to consider. Intro is very important to grab attention and set the scene for the piece (well at least mine anyway!). Outro can be fun, standard endings, or sometimes something unexpected (I like to do that if I can).

Anyways, just some thoughts on how I work at the moment.

Hehe..... i discovered the existence of the OSC about 10 days ago. I knew i did'nt had time in the last days, so i had a week (of nighty spare time) to work on my track. But i liked the idea of the contest, and the Hive catched me after 4 minutes of tweaking.

So i opened my Atari emulation, launched Cubase 2.0, converted and idea 25 years old (the first minute of my track) in a midi file and then i started drawing notes and searching variations around the "fixed" theme.

I did'nt even have time for the sounds... the one that had more time dedicated is the snare, which i wanted to be "gated" by the note velocity, and it required more or less an half hour, starting from a snare from the presets available from the community. Every other sounds had less time dedicated.

And, in the end, i did'nt have any time for the mixing. That's why there's no other effects, compression, EQ, whatever other than the Hive built-in. All sounds are routed to the output dry.

I have to say that without the drums presets i could'nt have done my entry, so thanks to the talented ppl which made them :)
