we've all been actively posting on that thread about mike using fruity, but one thing i've never heard anyone mention is professionals using Orion Platinum.

To be honest, i like Orion 5.5 alot, i like the workflow in orion, but the host wrappers seem really buggy in Orion and the application seem's unstable at the best of times. I think some part's need to be optimized more!

The included effects and instruments are good though and the workflow is productive, but i always think it seem's like a really cutdown loop based sequencer that functions well for creating quick patterns that would be exported to Logic/Cubase setups.

Anyone know of any professionals using Orion?

Yes.

Could you be more specific? What counts as professional use? Commercial releases through label? If that's the case, you could count me as one and I know other people as well.

Hi

I suppose if someone farted into a £/$50 dictaphone and mastered it to Cd and had some chart success we would consider that to be a good production platform, I have heard bits about Orion being unstable or buggy - but then again look at the forums for ALL platforms - they are full of people that encounter a variety of issues; so it is not an exclusive problem to Orion.

I have used the Demo for quite some time simply to audition downloaded vst demos - I can honestly say (with an admittedly limited save disabled version) that it fails me no more than Logic does.

The proof in the pudding is to try it out and see if it suits you.

Flipper.

sorry guys :) i never meant to use the professional word, because i hate that word as well...

When i say professional i mean commercial success (i guess)...

Well, all I can say is that I started out last year with Cubase VST/32 as I wanted to use what the 'Pros' were using & not graduate myself through several costly tiers of functionality upgrading one DAW to the next.

I incorrectly estimated my intellegence -vs- Cubase's learning curve & fell on my face & almost dropped out of D.Audio completely from sheer disgust.

I was doing 'musical' things within minutes of downloading Orion, & I haven't looked back since. Even if my zone of competence places Cubase within reach, I don't miss using it at all, although I AM sitting on a very cheap upgrade path for SX 2...probably gonna sell that when my season gets slow..

Orion has been my most valuble investment besides Reaktor 4, no regrets here @ all :D

when you consider "professional" as making a living out of music, then yes :D

I think Orion users tend to be more quiet about their host because they don't have any problems with it. Apart from Bones who is so happy with it he wants to make it a part of general publics everyday life

Seriously though, it dosen't matter weather people have had commercial success with Orion. What matters is that Mike Oldfield uses FL and we can all pity him for doing so :hihi:

I asked this question a few months ago.. and the general response (or lack of) was that there werent any well known names (admittedly) using the software..

then followed by someone saying 'you shouldnt give a crap who is using the software, unless you are a mindnumb robot who needs reassurance through others on the software you use' blah blah along those lines.. which doesnt really answer the question.

so I guess there arent any who are known to be well known.. or something like that :)

Its a strange issue. Wots-is-face from Prodigy apparantly used Reason on their new album but if you rea beyond the headlines he just used it to make loops that then went into ProTools to be turned into completed tracks. So he was using it to fire his creativity more than anything, although Propellerheads would have you believe differently.

We've almost finished our second album using ORION Platinum and it will again be released in Europe and America. The big difference is that every part of the entire album, up to the CD mastering stage, is completed in ORION Platinum, although we still prefer to record vocals via Cool Edit 2000 and import them into an Audio Track. More interesting is that whilst we used a lot of commercial VSTi on the first album, the new one has almost exclusively freeware VSTi playing alongside ORION's generators, yet the sound is a quantum improvement over the first.

I've asked on many ocassions but I still don't understand why people don't take ORION more seriously. For my money it has the highest quality sound of any virtual studio and more flexibility than I could ever need. I often read [and interject into] threads where people are discussing or looking for a feature that has been built-in to ORION for years. e.g. sidechains, Sampler, WaveFusion, Plucked String, etc.

I have a track on a commercial CD and a TV commercial. Does that make me 'pro' :?:

I use a lot of (commercial and free) vstis and vsts in Orion but never had a serious problem with them.
Even the Arturia VSTIs (which are not fully functional in FL f.e.) like the minimoog work flawlessly.
The only thing i would mention is, that the long pattern handling can be improved. Besides that Orion is absolutely stable - even on my Win98 PC.
