Ok, so I just finished moving and now my Waveterminal 192L is no longer working. Windows is showing it as error 10 (device cannot start), but I do not think the problem is hardware.

I've tried all the usual solutions -- uninstall/reinstall, change slots, all driver versions, clean contacts, etc -- to no avail. Every once in a while (maybe once in 10-12 boots), the card will start normally and function. Otherwise, no go.

The last time it started normally was when I reverted to the original drivers (circa 2002) from the install disc...on the next boot-up everything was fine, but then following that -- nothing.

I'm at a loss for answers. Anyone got any ideas? I really don't want a new card, since the Waveterminal does everything I want...

And you think this is not bad hardware why then?

Because plug-and-play recognizes the card every single time, even when the card doesn't start, and everytime after I uninstall it.

Plus, sometimes the damn thing just works. Weird. Well, it is 3 years old...

Ok, so let's follow this logic - Your car must be working because the lights come on, but it won't turn over with the engine. You pull out the key, the lights go off, you put the key back in, the lights come on, and you hear the starter trying to work, but it won't start...

Seriously, try it in a friend's computer or another computer if you have one. My guess is the card is dead, or on its last legs.

Would you follow logic if your car was running Windows????

My "car" starts about every 10th time, maybe if I follow a certain install procedure??? Who knows. It's confounding because it does work occassionally, just haven't figured out why. Anyway, I'm building another machine this weekend so I'll try it on that. Good tip.

Nothing to do with install order. Update me if you could though with the new system?

Well, I tried it in another machine and so far it has worked fine. The other machine is an old HP running Win Me, so it had some problems recognizing the card -- I had to force feed the drivers to it (I got warnings that the drivers did not match the hardware). Once I got the drivers loaded the card ran flawlessly for several boot sequences. Now I am back at stage one.

A friend recommended that I let the card run in the other machine for a few days, to spot any flakiness. I think I am going to do that. I'm also going to clear out any old drivers from my regular machine so I can get a totally clean install. Here goes.

I have had slots be flaky on a motherboard too. Old old 486, anything in the rightmost slot didn't work, stuff in the middle 'half' came up, and stuff on the left worked no problem. Very strange. Once you come to grips it's all just a computer, and expect the unexpected, you go just fine.

Keep me updated, I like to know about the weird ones.

Thanks for sticking with me on this one Devon. I appreciate the input.

I got an email from ESI tech support detailing the procedure for updating drivers. It's a slightly complex process becuase the card has soooo many driver files (one for each wave out, etc). ESI includes a utility in their driver updates to clean out the old drivers. Guess who didn't use this utility the last time he updated the drivers.

Apparently, now my WT192 driver system is a mess. I've tried cleaning it up, but still to no avail. It may actually be a mobo problem (which would be preferable since its still on warantee). I need to talk to ESI support on Monday.

Note to anyone upgrading ESI drivers: USE THE INFCLEAR utility before you change your drivers!

(even if that isn't the real problem its worth noting)
