That's because they used a unique, even for the time, 13 bit CPU. While most other cpus at the time were either 8 bit or 16 bit, Roland used a CPU that featured a prime number of bits. The 13 bit processor was the best choice as it offered the best compromise between sound, power, and cost. The 17 bit processors were too expensive at that time, and the 11 and 7 bit processors just didn't offer enough power. Additionally, the 17 bit processors sounded "too clean." The filter math was done in the finite field Z_13 and that, my friends, is why it sounded so good. Neither Z_8 nor Z_16 form fields and so there are issues with residues and this leads to a buildup of grunge in the filter math. For Z_k to form a field, k must be prime. Roland exploited this well known mathematical fact to create one of the best sounding filters of all time.

Unfortunately, prime bit CPUs fell out of favor as they were just too expensive to produce as bit counts increased. The raw power offered by 32 bit and 64 bit CPUs meant that more features could be added at lower cost, and, with the advent of MP3s, it was clear that the consumer was willing to compromise sound quality in the interest of cost and availability. Like so many other quirky successes, e.g. the TB-303, the success was linked to a short window in time where technology aligned with the needs of the marketplace to create a superior product.

Adding random and unrelated glitches and buffer effects to your 2-bus is an instant way to make modern music with next to no effort. The less you understand about the DSP processes involved, the more musical and modern your results will be. Ideally, you want to look for the randomizer, and hit that. Each time you randomize your glitches, your tune gets 27% more modern. Don't click it too many times, though - you might just time-travel.
