Just curious to see what system you all use for backup. At the moment, I do not have an external HD and won't be affording one anytime soon, so I am more interested in software packages such as Drive Image and True Image. Any positive/negative experiences with these?
Also, say I have 40 GB of data. When I create an 'image' using these applications, is the image 40 GB as well or is there some sort of compression?

Take a look at the new version of NovaBackup. It's cheap and very slick...

I back up my system to an dedicated hard drive with Novabackup automatically, on a weekly schedule. I can keep three whole images of my system on the backup drive. Novabackup compresses the backup data and does a verification pass to make sure everything is accurately stored.

I also backup my music and quicken folders nightly to another hard drive.

For long-term archival I burn stuff to CD and keep em in a fire safe.

Disk imaging would be a good thing, too... I've been a slacker about that, but I should image my system partition (C:) to make it easier to recover from a drive failure.

Get a dvd burner, it is really great investment. It makes backing up a breeze, just drag and drop massive folders for quick storage ...
imo, a very cost effective solution as well, blank dvds are cheaper and cheaper these days, portable, may/may not be modifiable, but just burn another one as the media is cheaper..

also great for reviving your past cd collection, into a more easily managable dvd set

imaging works well too, there are tons of apps out there for that ... just gotta make sure your image is indeed something you will want to have (prob best to do it near a new reinstall)

This has an Express version that came with the little $20 Burner I bought(rebated of course) and the lite version of Nero works fine.
Depends on the money you want to spend.
A DVD Burner with RW Discs are the best like they said tho....

DVD does sound great, but I can't shell out the $150 for DVD drive. How much info does one blank DVD-R hold?

Also, still open to hearing if anyone tried any of the software imaging routes...

$150 ? They are only about £40UK here. Blank DVD's hold 4.8 Gb, and at under £14UK for 25 blanks, its a bargain

Yeah, thats great and all, but I'm an animator and video editor as well as a musician. Got any tips for backing up 400GB worth of data?

DVD burner. Mostly I make backups on a project-by-project basis. Most peojects fit on a single blank CD. Big ones go on DVDs. I very rarely get a project that's bigger than a few DVDs.
