Thanks Xander, Forbidden Planet was the inspiration for Star Trek so that is why the formula is more cliched now. The set design and the music are what make it stand out (the story line is interesting as well) but the acting and the script were nothing special IMO.

None that I know of. There is a pc program that will let you do theramin like sounds using video as the sensor but no vsti. I have a sample of a real theramin that I have used on ocassion but it is not very good, the dynamics of playing a real theramin are such that it does not tranlate well to software unless a touchpad is used. One is sorely needed so if a dev out there would like to try. A real one is the way to go and you can get a Moog Etherwave kit for around 250 USD.

You know, I would LOVE to have a real one again. I had one when I was a kid - used three valves/tubes and had two copper antennas - one rod was for amplitude and the other rod was for pitch. What was 'magic' about the theramin was that you just moved your hands in the air near the rods and produced some amazing sounds. I plugged mine into an old spring reverb and put on weeny little concerts for my brothers and sisters (whacking the springs with your foot now and then also produced some "eery raygun-type sounds" too).

Now all we need is a midi controller using the same principle!

(and I bet Peter Gabriel would be the first to use it)

A great track made better. And truthfully, I think it doesn't need any samples at all...

Thanks Mark, another one that I was not sure would get finished to my satifaction (never quite sure if I am done) But tonight I will be adding some surprise finishing touches to this so stay tune for one last round.

I listened to this hundreds of times by now and keep saying "Oh I would like to add this new sound here or what if I moved that part over two measures"
best to walk away for awhile and let others give feedback.

I will post some added sounds tonight and then call it finished. Want to start My next scifi tribute. Already got a name and an intro to that one.

Another version with the help of Vurt, He added some theramin type sounds that fit nicely in this mix. I did a little processing to it (a smidgeon of ktgranulator and some reverb).

Are you talking about 21st Century Theremin?

That's my favorite Reaktor ensemble

Theremin saw style...

I think that is the one he used. I added some processing to it, maybe i need to go back and bring up the volume some, but you can hear it at different sections in version 2. It does not have quite the theramin sound but is close.

Thanks for posting this track. I really enjoyed it and I'd like to hear more of your work.

BTW, beware ye would-be theremin owners. I have made and played the Moog kit, and made and played the SWTPC kit of yore. It is a real bear to play anything other than wild swoops. Clara Rockmore, the only real virtuoso on the instrument, was a violinist to start with, and she played with a monitor speaker concealed behind her head (i.e. she could correct pitch before the audience would notice).

Theremins are fun, but unless you play solos using a pitch knob instead of a keyboard, you probably won't be using it on many tracks.

I hacked-together a Theremin in SuperCollider (sort of a cross between Synthedit and Csound), with a goal of using my laptop's touchpad for theremin control. I was going to implement "constraint," a warp-to-nearest-real-note function, controlled by the shift key or something like that. I let it drop, basically because my laptop of that time didn't have enough power to track smoothly.

I haven't explored Synthedit. I bet the P4 could Thereminize in realtime.
