Eclipsis

Post

Hi Folks,

Here goes... My first OSC submission.

Early on, I announced that I was working on a track that sounded like a gospel/electro remix of ELO. Sorry to disappoint, but I had to abandon that one for lack of ideas, and so instead offer this little house number.

I used 11 instances of eclipsis. I also used several of the shared presets as starting points for my patches. I'm sorry, but I can't remember which ones I started out with.

The plugins I used are as follows:
  • Soundgoodizer
    Cockos ReaEQ
    W1 Limiter
    Voxengo SPAN
    Fruity Parametric EQ2
    Acon Digital Multiply
    Bionic Delay
    Kjaerhus Classic Reverb
    Fruity Delay 2
    Fruity Filter
    Fruity Fast Dist
    Fruity Blood Overdrive
    Rough Rider
Finally, I want to say that this was a really fun challenge. It was not the easiest synth to work with, so when I couldn't tweak my sounds exactly right, I was forced to just move on. That was a huge help in getting me to actually finish a track for once. So thanks!

Enjoy!

Well, not an epic work, but a little jump'n run computer game soundtrack ...
Ok, the built up is similar to the "Hive-Elephants", maybe I have another idea sometime :hihi:

Although there are numerous patches for the eclipsis available, I dicided to develop all sounds for this track from the "init patch" of mojo42 (Danke, Yvonne!). :tu:

So these are the specifics of "Hurry Up!":
8 instances of Eclipsis, because my DAW Cubase LE4 doesn't allow more ... :(
Effects:
A1StereoControl
Audiocation Compressor
BootEQmkII
epicVerb
dBounce
RoomMachine844
and the Cubase native reverb RoomWorks SE

...hoping there is anybody out there enjoying this ... :band:

For some reason, your track made me smile for the whole time! Nice and funny.
If I could say something (can i?) i've found the hi-hat a bit "obsessive"... i mean, the "machine gun" effect... If the track were mine, i would have tried to make the various hits differents by using velocity, or the keytrack to change a bit the sound.
But as i am already becoming old, perhaps it is exactly how you wanted it to be (emulating an arcade cabinet or console game sound)... in such a case just ignore me :)

Lot of good new tracks were added. Great job everyone :)

Boy, that was some hard work, Eclipsis wasn't really easy to get the hang of and I had a tough time getting it to sound how i wanted it to. I failed quite often and am not overly content with the result...
Anyhoo, thanks to Photonic for his drums and Mojo42 and Richard Semper for some patches and inspirations.

Originally I wanted to do something more experimental this time (like some jazzy stuff in 9/8 or maybe country) but then this idea came along and now it is same old, same old. Again in 3/4 (or 6/8? dammit, I am never quite sure).

My greatest problem was the snare. It works fine in the slow part, but becomes too dominant in the fast section, so I reduced it a bit.
The hi-hat hits have different velocity, but seemingly not enough... :?

Of course can you say something about my track, quite the opposite, I'm grateful for every hint :D

@rockingricky: I feel same way like Parduz. Couldn´t get the smile off my face during the whole time I listened your track. But I also felt same like Parduz concerning the machine gun sound of the snare. I find your song is refreshing, creative and well done. Good luck :)

@fese:
I also like this one. I guess it is 3/4  Sounds actually very "french". It is intresting to listen to all that very different kind of styles and genre here. I was a bit in a worry because mine is also far beyond EDM, House, Trance or Ambient, but I guess this is not a problem, but simply another style I could add to this colourful mixture here at OSC.

My news: Yep 8 instances are the absolutely limit, also in my case. I tried 9 but then the sh*t happened again. Again it was Richard Semper`s ( ) Combo 2. Aaaaaaaaaaaargh. I gave it up now. No presets from Richard anymore which is really a pity, but I have to face reality.

@RichardSemper: If you wish to make me insanely happy, please produce a huge soundbank for Sylenth 1  That would soothe my pain

Not a problem at all. My track history is nowhere near those sounds either!!! I did a Bluegrass for the TAL Bassline challenge, when perhaps it should have been a thumping EDM!!! A bit "tongue in cheek" really for that synth - but it was fun doing it, and took people by surprise :?

This challenge looks like it's going to throw up even more styles, so am looking forward to hearing them all. :phones: So far so good - not quite sure where my entry sits in the "genre" tags???

My song even surprised myself  I had no idea that I can be so sensible :borg:

But that`s really a good experiance. OSC makes it possible.

Yeah, turned out to be somewhat french, hence the title :) I actually picture this being performed by accordion, upright bass, a jazzy drummer and a cute french girl singing (and I would prefer that over my synthesized version). Anyone knows any cute French singer? :hihi:

@fese: Sorry can`t help with the cute french singer. I just know rough german singer

@all: Because my OSC entry will be my very first audio upload to the internet, I still have got a couple of questions and hope you can help me.
1. If I export to audio, what is the recommended bit depth 8 bit, 16 bit, 24 bit or 32 bit?
2. Shall I upload wave or mp3 to Soundcloud?
3. For the case that is mp3, what is the recommended bitrate?
4. What is the recommended loudness? At the moment it is -8.36 dB. Is this enough?
5. Mixdown: Will be no problem I guess, BUT...
6. Mastering: I have no idea. I know equalizer and compressor of course, but is this a "can do" or is it a "must do"??? I ask that "silly" questions, because often I hear no difference when I play around with this tools. If I hear a difference it is mainly rather worse than before and so I`m a bit scared concerning mastering.

I understand the sense of mastering if one records real instruments like real drums, real voice, guitar and so on. But I don`t know if it is necessary at all if all sounds are a synthesizer, because synthesizer has already effects and if I don`t like a certain sound I can use an insert effect or equalizer while making the mixdown and so it is not completely clear for me if a final mastering of the audio file is necessary at all when one is making a song only with Synthesizer.

But it seems everyone here uses compression at least. So: Is this a must do?

AND for what exactly do I need Limiter, Exciter and all that stuff? I guess Limiter has something to do with this ultimate loudness everybody seems to want, but to be honest: Hey I don`t expect my happy little song played into a club   I mean: Do I really need this?

Probably it will be the best when I simply choose one of this presets at MHORSE P3, what do you think? :scared:

Last but not least:
Is there something I need to know before I make my first upload to Soundcloud?

That`s all so far :) I guess I`m keeping you busy, sorry
Cheers
Yvonne

Hi there. Probably export to 16-bit, MP3 196 Kbps. Soundcloud will downsample it and make it sound worse anyway, but that will keep the download reasonable quality and small.

.. I understand the sense of mastering...
There is no requirement to master any tracks for OSC. Though, since mastering is for taking a mix and making it sound as good as possible on as many playback devices as possible, it is usually a good idea to do that for anything you want other people to listen to. I would suggest to listen on all the speakers/headphones you have and adjust the overall EQ as best you see fit to sound the best on all devices. You will find all kinds of different levels on tracks in OSC and all over the internet. The 'pro' tracks try to get the levels as close to 0db as possible without distorting and clipping the sound, often compressing the dynamic range. You can use a compressor + limiter combination to boost the levels and prevent clipping to some degree. A couple good free ones are: TDR Kotelnikov (mastering compressor) and Limiter no6. They have some presets that you could try, if you found the number of controls intimidating. Of course, you by no means have to master the track, it would mostly just help get the levels similar to those others will submit. And louder "sounds better", so it is usually good to be in the same ballpark. You can always listen to your tracks overall levels and compare to a 'pro' track you like to see if it's close.

Also not sure if 'MHORSE P3' is 'donationware' or not; but as donationware is not precisely 'free' it would not generally be allowed; but I didn't see anything on the site saying one way or the other, just noticed the donation buttons...
