Sadly it's only a sampled mellotron - from factory Kontakt library if I remember correctly.

Thanks for all the new mixes guys!

Is that what's trailing off at the end? It sounds great!
For the drum tracks i only EQed, compressed the individual tom tracks and used VoS FerricTDS on the bus
Same here. The drums sound so processed already that all I did was EQ the inner kick mic to get more of that metal tack-tack sound.
I only EQed the Mellotron track (by the way, how did u record the mellotron track??)
I liked it, too, and I liked the way you gave it such clear space in the middle. I worked so hard to make it sound big and wide that it actually back-fired on my and buried it with the guitars. I ended up having to use automation to bring it out and even then it's not as clearly defined as yours.

I liked your mix a lot. :)

OK, here's my take on this :

First of all thanks Palu for this great track, highly enjoyable, and fun to work with.

What I did with/to it :

Grouped the drumtracks : Eqed the Amb-mid both Kicks and the Toms(panned left to right)-> STA Enhancer-> TB BaricadeCM.

Clean Guitars : Panned L/R JCM900 send reverb Long/short.

Basses : Boogex 1x Fuzz Nova67P other one EQed.

Shred : TSE808/GrindMachineCM L/R -> Spirit Reverb -> TB Barricade CM.

Mellotron : Eqed 3KHz -> send.

Lead Guitar : TSE808 GrindMachineCM ReaDelay MSED TB Barricade CM -> Send.
To me it now sounds like the solo on Maggotbrain, all the nuances are there, I love it.

Sends : 4x Ambiance.

Mixbus : ReaXComp, jb smash pro, dc_remove, StereoChannel.

Enjoy.

Szalonykp,

Thank you for sharing your tracks with us for this KVR contest. Great track and nice guitar work (I'm a guitarist too).

Attached is my version of your song. It is a radical departure from your example mix but this is how I hear it. I like to bring out the contrast and dynamics in a mix so this may seem very "quiet" compared to yours.

This mix was built in Cubase 6 using only 2 outside plugins; SIR convolution reverb, and a tube emulating plugin called "Tubelimit". All other EQ and FX were native Cubase - and I used very little - just enough to make each part stand out. Your tracks contained enough info (especially the drums) that I didn't feel any external FX were necessary. Guitar tracks were re-amped using the VST Amp Racks in Cubase.

I used a some octave pitch shifting to thicken up the bass a tad as well as add a high part to the "mellotron" track.

I like your arrangement but feel like there should be a change of some kind at 5:04. I was temped to create a harmony from your center guitar part but was afraid that might bend the rules too far. Will do if you want!

Yes it is epicverb with volume automation

Thank u !! I had to reference other mixes and constantly export my mix so that i could listen to it through my smartphone speakers.. Seems like i need some monitors....

"Radical" sounds interesting - I'm looking forward to hearing it (will do that in a second).

Thanks for the other mixes too. :tu:

And one more thing - I'm listening to all the mixes, but I'm not commenting, because I don't want to give people that are still working on the mixes the advantage of knowing what I like and what I dislike.

There are many good mixes here, very different and I can't wait to start listening to them for real and start making notes :).

Great work guys!

Very interesting song. I had never mixed metal much less ambient metal. This was a lot of fun.

I tried a few different guitar amp plug-ins, but ended up with Guitar Rig4 on the bass and all electric guitars.

This was an interesting one, with the reamp thing and the need to create a cool ambient sound.
I think that the most important work was the cleaning in some finger movement of the rithm guitars tracks via volume automation, and keep in check the clicks in some tracks.
Where not written I've used FabFilter Pro Q2 as equalizer.

DRUMS:
Ambient close got the L/R chennels swapped, so I swapped them back :D
And I also swapped the whole kit, because i usualli mix by the audience's point of view.
Kicks: the two channel where mixed, and I added a synt kick with sine generator and a gate (F key), to add lows and glue kick and bass. Eq and compression on kick's bus.
Snare: volume mixing on the two channels distortion, cleaning eq, compression and then another eq to carve the sound.
Kick and Snare got their parallel compression channels and the one of the snare where gated.
Hi-Hat: creaning eq, hi passed and de-essed
Overhead: phase alligned, limited to remove sono snare and hi-passe
Toms: grouped in two busses, rack and floor. Eq and compression with SSL channel strip on the busses.
Room: busses, volume mixed (the bulled was not used), and then eq carved and smashed with Rough Rider compressor.
BASS:
Both basses where reamped with the free Ignite SHB-1. The distorted part was parallel distorted with Amplitube Free. Free Acustica Red EQ to add low and and mids then carved with ProQ2 and compressed with the NI Supercharger.
GUITARS:
All reamped with the free Ignite Emissary simulation, both for clean and distorted parts. I tried other alternatives but at the end I always ended liking more the Emissary.
Ignite NadIR was used for cab simulation (Guitar Hack ENGL impulse) and TSE808 as a booster and as a distortion pedal for the lead guitar.
The Clean rithm has the Acon Multiply used as a tremolo.
Distorted guitars has cleaning eq, multiband compression on lows and shaping eq.
MELLOTRON: cleaned from hi resonances, saturated and compressed.
EFFECTS: As a delay I liked the TAL Dub III the most, then used 3 verb: one room made by to copying the room mikes ambient of the drums, a big hall, used on some drums and lead parts to add epicness to the sound and a snare plate inpulse loaded via ReaVerb.
STEREO BUSS: compression via TDR Kotelnikov, a bit of eq and saturation via Camel Crusher (R.I.P. :( )

Volume automations on various parts to make them stend.

This track was the first time I mixed "top down," approaching things from busses first (besides reamping) before tweaking individual tracks. It was a learning experience.

Guitars and bass were amped using Ignite Amps' fabulous Emissary and, for the clean guitars, Shattered Glass Audio's Ace.

SonEQ was used heavily for tone shaping, and REAPER's stock EQ and comp were used for more surgical tasks. I also used Antress compressors on the busses *dodges the rotten fruit thrown from the crowd*.

This was the first time I'd had multiple room recordings for drums, so I wasn't sure quite how to use them. I processed them all separately and mixed them together based on their salient traits - one for the lows, one for the highs to give clarity to the cymbals, and the third for a very subtle somewhat sludgy low-midrange. The drums were probably what I processed the most - I wanted to give the kick and snare enough punch to cut through, but without mixing them overly loudly in comparison to the rest of the instruments. The mix is definitely a bit dominated by guitar, but I felt that that's what it needed.

A lot of the ambience came from RP-delay and Oldskoolverb working together. RP-delay's ability to distort delay feedback gives a really interesting texture IMO, which helps add interest to what might be an otherwise vanilla ambient delay sound.

This song was really cool, and I hope I did it justice.

Hey this is my first one of these mixes. Super fun. The guitar DIs where tough to troubleshoot but I ended up trying to steer it into like a traditional sounding proggy black metal/neo-folk track. Could use a bit more polishing still, I think something rendered weird, but I figure I should throw my hat in the ring.

Plugins used in FL Studio 11:
FL EQ on everything
Drums: Flux Bittersweet, FL Maximus on drum buss
Snr/Tom send: FL Reverb, Lexicon 480L IR
Basses: TSE Bod, TSE 808, Lexicon 480L IR, Poulin Soldano, bass cab IRs, Antress Exciter, Antress Deathcore, FL Maximus
Clean Guitars: Poulin Hybrit, Redwire IRs, FL Reverb
Lead: same as clean + Kjaerhus Delays
Heavy Guitars: TSE 808, Antress Deathcore, Poulin Mesa clone, Redwire IRs
Synth: Kjaerhus Delays, Kjaerhus Phaser, FL Reverb, Lexicon 480L IR, Dubbhism Spring IR
Room buss: Henry Oolonga Room IR
Automated Reverb send: FL Reverb, Antress Flashverb

This is my entry.

First time I mixed a metal song, first time I did re-amping what was quite fun. Used NI Guitar Rig 5 for the guitars and GTR 3 for bass.

I tried to give my mix a 'progressive post-black metal' touch (whatever that means ...).
I used a lot of automation and tried to incorporate the Eddie Kramer Guitar Channel but failed. In the end I used it only on one guitar.

Looks like the extention is paying off this time around. You still have over 3,5 days to send in your submission.

So please keep it up. And please don't forget to offer WAV downloads.

Hi, this is my mix,
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ucc0yyglnty0l ... 2.mp3?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/w9yw1gm919xd1 ... 2.wav?dl=0

and here are some notes:
DAW: Reaper, all instruments grouped, I used the dynamic spectrum mapper 2 i bought when it was at a very low price around christmas, it is a kind of a multibandcompressor on the subgroups, and i am afraid i maybe have overdone a bit.
The channels:
1. Bass : Amplitube Ampeg, the distorted part with the T-rex Mudhoney before the amp
2. drums, i panned it to drummers view (HH left) because the overhead was that way:
Kick: i used only a bit of the Kick out , mostly Kick in with Nebula EQ Mamexp. 4,7 kh and 80 hz a bit boosted.
snare and toms: DC8c comp, a bit of distortion by Nomad factorys magnetic2 on the snare,
overheads - hipass, hihat only to place the signal, the ambientchannels not that loud.
3. clean guitars: reamped with scuffhams s-gear2 git c with the taldub delay
i copied the guitar c to automate the Vallhalla feedbackreverb which can be heared at the end of part 1 and at the end of the song.
4 distorted guitars: copied the tracks, one with s-gear2 and one with amplitube.
5. mellotron - hipass, 8khz 3 db boost
6. 2 buss: span analyser
A lot of volumen automation and some send fx, Psp springbox, Reverberate plate, vallhalla room, replica delay, mostly for clean git, Toms and snare and mellotron.

i like the song, the chords in the clean part are very nice, it was fun to mix, sorry for my bad english and thank you for listening.
