Sorry, but you just sound like you don't have any experience of using audio software in OS X. Or of how Apple handle/support their software. I can't see much point continuing this exchange.

Edit: I didn't realize you were talking about current VST/AU versions(?), but even so what I said stands.

Damn, I can see the keynote with Alchemy sounds being demonstrated on f***ing iPad creating that obligatory wow. This is really bad news. I think Apple would be cool as hell if he continued with development of Windows version, but for some reason that seems just like a foolish wish. After so many years, I consider buying Omnisphere as a closest actively developped thing to Alchemy that runs on Windows. ...and I encourage everyone else to do so.

That won't happen because Apple won't sell more Macs if they support a Windows version, people will just use a PC. If it's a Mac-only program, you obviously will need to buy one of their Macs to use it, and then Apple makes a whole lot more money.

We've both mentioned future, presumably OS X, versions.

Actually, is it me or does your original argument actually make less sense if you're only talking about the current AU/VST? Really, what would be the point in saying that Alchemy on OS X has no future if you were talking only about current versions and ruling out future versions made specifically for that platform. It seems a bit like someone in 2002 saying Logic 6 has no future on OS X.

As a small (non audio) developer myself, I am perfectly aware of the struggle to crete, maintain, market, and distribute products, deal with customers, piracy, logistics, and tons of other things.

I am pretty happy that Apple got them. They absolutely deserve it. They were excellent people (at least they were super nice here in KVR), with very deep DSP knowledge.

While I am sad loosing Alchemy (yes I own it), I think what happened it's really good for them.

Hmmm. Got me thinking. The code has to be the same, right? ... I mean on the basic level, it's just a machine code, right? And MACs use the same Itel processosrs like the others do, right? Same instruction sets. There has to be way how to develop a MAC -> WIN adaptor!

I remember the same story when NI bought Sonicbytes and Phrazor - imho still the best and most elegant lightweight DAW - was doomed. Exactly the same reaction: Sonicbytes had to drop their products without a warning and was not allowed to say anything. I never heard or saw anything from NI that could count as a replacement for Phrazor.

Given this story I tend to question if Alchemy will ever reappear.

Well Apple do seem to have Redmatica. Except for a lightweight version of AutoSampler having made a recent appearance in MainStage.

Don't expect that to happen. If it did that may very well put Spectrasonic into buy territory for the EVIL that is APPLE.

First, I told you so.

Second, Apple is VERY specific and picky. They hit camel for many of the right reasons from a strategic vantage. A company like U-he is NOT a target for apple because U-he have too may products in their line at this point. Although everyone does have their price, I'm pretty sure Urs has too much vested in his company at this point to be a reasonable acquisition as well. I get the impression that he is the kind of guy that is always tinkering with something, so he would most likely start another company that would become another competitor that had more capital at that point = bad decision for apple. He isn't really competition for apple either....never going to happen.

I would say the same about NI but at this point they have gone sample based and have all their eggs in one tidy little basket. It also overlaps many of the same areas apple is getting involved with...sample manipulation. I could see NI at this point, and those guys have been around long enough to want to move on and try something else maybe. They might feel like it's time to cash in. Apple will evaluate how many products NI is actually involved in, and if they are a competitor, and if the move eliminates a competitor, and if it's technology they can use. It has to hit ALL these check marks.
