So presumably Apple will no longer sell Alchemy to PC users (not Alchemy 2, just the original Alchemy), and will existing users be able to reinstall their software in the future? I don't know if Alchemy uses challenge/response or a serial number. This is something that really worries me, I could be using a synth in loads of projects, and then suddenly the developers are bought by another company, who think it's a good idea to remove the product from the market, and I can no longer use the synth I paid for, if I ever have to reinstall it. (Presuming it uses challenge/response.) And with massive companies like Apple buying up Camel Audio, you realize it could happen to any VST developer, because the money Apple can offer would make any of them sell up (and who could blame them).
This is one reason why certain synths will remain usable in the future - they have been 'cracked' - the ones that haven't, may be lost forever.

Alchemy doesn't use C/R. Just back up all your downloads from your CA account somewhere and you're good to go.

And turning this into a PC/Mac thing is so pointless. Being bought out by any DAW maker was inevitably going to exclude users of other software from using future Camel products. Would you rather they'd been bought out by Cakewalk so you couldn't use Alchemy 2 without Sonar? Or if you already use Sonar, just consider Image-Line, or Ableton, or whoever. That's a nonsensical argument - two wrongs don't make a right. At least if they had been bought out by a PC DAW developer, the PC users (who are the majority...) could consider switching DAWs IF they weren't already using that DAW.
Why would Apple not continue to sell the original Alchemy to PC users? That's a very interesting question. Presumably they think they can force people to switch to Macs (yeah right) just to use Alchemy again, which I am sure most PC users won't. So they'd rather lose money by just shelving a perfectly good VST.

People are worried about this because it means that any of the synths we use could be bought out overnight. Apple could buy up every VST developer in the world tomorrow, if they wanted, then where would we be?

They can't buy NI - or better said NI won't ever sell out. They're fine with themselves as they are - big enough, lucrative enough, 4 big offices around the world...

Seriously though, can anybody blame users for being upset? We'll get over it. It just makes me nervous though, for what other beloved software will be taken over to the "Dark side" by Apple. Laughter is the best medicine!

I can't understand why Apple made Logic Mac only - wouldn't they make more money by making a PC version too, since the PC market is much bigger? Or do they think they'll sell more Macs if they keep it Mac only?

Been there, done that. I was a PC Logic user when emagic sold to Apple, and terminated Logic on the PC platform.

(And actually, before that, I was a Logic *Atari* user when they terminated Atari ST support.)

Use Macs now, never been happier, and Logic has never been better. After the rants are over, the sky doesn't fall, people adjust, and we make music with whatever tools we can.

But MOST people use PCs. PCs are cheaper, PCs have far more programs written for them than Macs - because most people use PCs. People are worried about the possibility of this happening to other developers. Look at what happened to Hypersonic 2.

That's good news (I'm not an Alchemy owner), at least it won't be lost forever.
You would think that if this sort of thing happened, the buying company would 'release' the software as freeware, removing copy protection, so anybody could use it. If their new product was better than the old one (and you would presume it would be), then they would have nothing to lose, and everybody would be happy.
