what's wrong with the Orion's host wrapper?

I'd enjoy hearing an elaboration on that, as that for me is Orion's biggest strength (one of..)

the workflow is productive, but i always think it seem's like a really cutdown loop based sequencer that functions well for creating quick patterns that would be exported to Logic/Cubase setups.

this is 100% incorrect.
ORION is so far from a loop based sequencer -
with real-time audio recording, we're using ORION for everything in the studio these days, from creating and producing sample CD's to writing our own songs - it's simply all we need.
i think it could be easy to get into the idea that orion is just a loop sequencer, but you have to realize that the software cannot think or write music for you -
if you tend to write loop-based music, new software probably isnt going to change that.

if i break it down to the simplest of ideas:
if you dont want to use "loops" then dont use them.
ORION can record patterns up to 999 measures in legnth (and unlimited legnth AUDIO tracks) - i garauntee you that nobody is going to listen to that many measuers of your one track (clocking in at some 27 minutes playing time.....LOL) long enough to find the repeating loop point....see what i mean?
you dont HAVE to program loops, you could just as easily program (or record via midi keyboard) the entire part (bassline/synths, etc..) as one long pattern, always changing - never "looping".

i'll tie this up with a thought that is commonly left out of these discussions:
MAKE music -
MAKE it -
in the time it took you to read this, you could've written your best new piano part ever! That bassline you've been trying to nail down could be DONE by now! GO MAKE MUSIC!
use loops if you want to - it DOESNT mean you suck!
use synth/sampler presets if you want to - you DONT have to program all your own sounds!
JUST MAKE IT -

NOW~!

Actually, the pattern length is unlimited, the display will only show 3 digits tho

Yeah, you just need to double click the digits and enter the length you need

BTW, what happened to the Orion Toolkit CD, any chance of a new/updated version?

Sorry 'bout that!
we never had much interest in it from our customers, so we decided to re-think the disc itself. we are planning to re-release a new version of the ORION MEGA TOOLKIT hopefully this year, or early next year.
we're just too busy with current projects to tackle it just yet - but we've already completed 8 brand-new .wav discs that will be released in the coming months - not to mention a few other formats of new discs - WHEW!

thanks for remembering our short-lived ORION disc!

It even can 1400, if you wish, it only shows 999 but records 1400 or what you want

My special problem with Orion (I am a writer and will have a book out in a big publisher-house in 1-2 years, am I a pro-musician then? just kiddin'

) is that no other program crashes my PC so often as Orion Platinum 5500 does. It makes bzzzzzrrrssssszzzz!!!!!! after playing with a VST and load another, for example, and crashes. 2 times PC didn't even start again and some pro came and could nothing do but re-install XP (after which I lost my Tracktion-registration). Those problems I never have with EnergyXT, Tracktion, Massiva, even old n-track. I don't know what it is, as Orion has wonderful synths (Ultran, wow, Wasp-XT, wow! good drum-sampler, good sampler, Wavefusion, I'd definitely tell anyone to test the demo, even the pros

) and pretty good effects, some really new at the time they came out. I find the program really good, even if EnergyXT is better

, and as MY PC crashes every so often with Orion and not with others doesn't really say others would have that problem. The maker of Orion knows what musicians like, I think. Would it be more stable for me I'd use EnergyXT AND Orion as hosts, and EnergyXT in Orion then.
Then Kriminal's things for Orion are just wonderful in my opinion.

Actually it isn't really unlimited. I forget exactly how long they can be, but I think the pattern limit is somewhere between 4000 and 5000. And those are beats, not measures.

I usually use 2048 or 4096 long patterns when I start on my ambient. Several minutes of space for improvisation.

I vaguely remember a guy from OhmForce (90% sure

) singing Orion Platinum's praise in Computer Music a while back.

For me, the fact that I use it and I love it is all that matters.
