Thank you very much for the info. Im a beginner and have Fred Welsh's Synth Cookbook, however I cannot find a host that will accept his synth that he recommends as well as the Freak(a)scope. Any suggestions? My computer uses Windows 64 and the driver is the Asio4v2. I do have Mulab, but it will not recognize the plug-ins.

What I see is that Fred Welsh only suggests standard VST plugins. This is an industry standard, most hosts accept these. But how to let a host scan for its plugins so it knows about their existance is different. In some hosts you have to point in the settings to a folder where you have your plugins installed.
MuLab should support VST(i) plugins, so there must be something you're not doing right when you try to load these.
Here at KVR we have a specialised MuLab forum: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=79
Maybe try to ask the question there again, I don't know how it works.

If you only use the host to play one VSTi, this is the somplest option:
