Newbie Q: how to set up RC within Cubase (8.05)?

I would like to try using RC within Cubase with, say, Halion Sonic instruments.
Is this still the way to go about it, or has it become a bit easier since then?

Actually, exploring a bit, I am thinking my question perhaps does not matter much: I am on safer ground using RC as standalone, with Halion Sonic, exporting my MIDI track, and then importing it into Cubase.
I already have enough instability in Cubase 8.05, to add more troubles! :hihi:

I agree pumafred. I did not respond earlier because of your specific request. Now that you have changed the scenario I would like to reply to you.

Personally I find RC much easier to control and be creative from the stand alone version.

Using a virtual MIDI cable I'm easily able to send the data to any vst or DAW I have worked with. Instead of exporting you may want to try a virtual MIDI cable and pipe the MIDI to Cubase.

One of the best can be found here (and it's free :tu:):

Check out rptMIDI too if you would like to use MIDI over LAN. This will add even more versatility to your arsenal :)

Attila plans multi-MIDI capability which will make RC even more usable being able to send to many vst's :tu:

Glad you got RC working the way you need it :tu:

Thanks, dsan,

I´ve seen your recommendation of virtual MIDI cable before and every time I went to the tobias site I felt a bit intimidated. Do you know of any place explaining how to set this up?

I am sure it is not difficult but, from what I see, in that site you can only download the free software, but I do not see any guide.

BTW, when you pipe the MIDI to your DAW, you must set the latter to record MIDI, correct? Synchronize the BPM, the time signature, etc., no?

There's nothing to be intimidated about but I agree instructions could be helpful at the site. Installation of loopMIDI is fairly straight forward. Be sure to unblock the download first if you are on Windows.

Once installed, run loopMIDI and create as many ports as you need. Each port will offer 16 channels. I generally create ports in pairs - an in and an out. Remember, you do not want to route an in to an in using virtual MIDI. I have aptly named my ports In1, Out1, In2, Out2, etc. Something that makes sense to you should be used.

loopMIDI is used for routing MIDI on the same machine, like RC to Cubase or the reverse.

rtpMIDI is used when you want to connect over LAN, like RC on computer 1 and Cubase on computer 2. Don't forget to install Bonjour Services if you are on Windows.

You won't need either of these if you host your VST inside RC. I prefer to route to VST's outside RC or in the DAW to give a greater degree of versatility.

There are several tutorials on how to set up virtualMIDI cables around the web. You should look for one to help you understand the principals. These are same whether it is loopMIDI, loopBEMIDI or some other. Just understand the main parts and you're basically covered.

Now, once you have the ports, on RC's MIDI setup tab you will find options for sending/receiving MIDI clock. Using the options you can start/stop your transports (DAW or RC) for recording.

Attila has the sync timing pretty tight, but, due to a particular machine's specs, there may be some latency. Latency, even minimally, is unavoidable.

Best you can do is adjust small inaccuracies after recording.

I hope this gets you going in the right direction but feel free to ask if you have questions. There's a lot of users here that are happy to help!

Good luck! :tu:

Thanks, dsan!

Still pretty intimidating ;-), but I will look into it.

I have RC and Cubase on the same machine, so I understand loopMIDI should be enough.

Now, MIDI clock is another thing for me to learn. Will do. Thanks again!
