I want to get a iPad to use for controller apps for daws and plugins.

are there any differences between the 16gb and the 64gb + besides the amount of storage space?

Does anyone need more than 16gb? do music apps take up a lot of space?

Does it matter which version? are the latest versions better for this stuff?

How is the ipad Air series? how about the Air 2?

Does a ipad to usb converter work good? no added latency? I wouldn't be using wifi in certain locations.

does this work for what I want to do?

What are the options for purchasing apps in the app store? can you buy a credit card for purchases? or do you have to use your credit card or bank account to set it up or to purchase?

what are your favorite ipad apps for controlling daws and plugins?

edit forgot to ask

how the hell do you put stuff like pdf's and music on your ipad? you know how you hook a usb drive up to your pc and drag the files? how do you do this with a ipad?

Thanks! :)

for controller apps ONLY you would be fine with an iPad2 16gb wifi for sure. if you don't trust a dedicated wifi for controlling purposes you should be fine with an applemade usb to lan adapter (be sure to plug the lan adapter into a powered usb hub and connect the hub via cck to the iPad!!!) and sending midi over lan or osc over lan.

iPad2 16gb wifi will be no joy for synth/daw/fx apps unless your needs are basic.

i got a nice app called PhoneDrive which sports an ftp server - so i can upload pdfs to my iPad via my webbrowser. PhoneDrive supports the "open in" feature so you can open a multitude of file types (pdfs are handled by the app itself btw).

Thank you. I'm confused on the "usb to lan adapter (be sure to plug the lan adapter into a powered usb hub and connect the hub via cck to the iPad!!!) and sending midi over lan or osc over lan."
part

Do you happen to have a link? I am searching and coming up with all sorts of options.

One of my friends wants to do this. his music computer is offline? would a usb wifi thing add any latency?

It's either find a cable or wifi. trying to figure out solutions for both.

on topic midi/osc over lan (i will stick to osc as this is what i do): you can use any network to send osc messages to your desktop from an ipad. i was investigating the wired solution as a more reliable way to remote my desktop. with touchosc it's dead easy to send osc and midi via network (either wifi and wired lan). www.hexler.net has all the necessary stuff available.

thanks. looking at going from the ipad to a pc with no internet. to control vsts and so on. I'm looking for a solution to this and also looking for a way to add wifi to a music computer that has no internet. so they can use the ipad to control via wifi. also wondering if there is any added latency going the usb wifi route? compared to other options.

Gotcha :)

for this TouchOSC

Re the offline computer. would this be a good solution?

also. does anyone know if Lemur will do all the things that TouchOSC does?

...and is Lemur compatible without using a lan cable instead of wifi?

EDIT found answer

"On top of full Open Sound Control support and its own wireless MIDI Bridge, TouchOSC can connect using OS X CoreMIDI Network Sessions or any iOS compatible MIDI interface or controller such as iConnectMIDI, Alesis iO Dock, MIDI Mobilizer II, iRig MIDI, and many others..."

also. why is it important to use a usb hub when doing this?

this nano dongle should do the trick (ad hoc network engaged by the desktop and joined by the ipad). touchosc does everything i need and it's easy to roll your own surface. can't comment on Lemur.

Nice. would this be a good "wire" solution? no usb hub required?

Does your host just recognize the ipad as a midi controller then? does it stay connected if you close one app and open another controller app? asking you or anyone who might know.

but you would need 2!! of them (one for either device) unless you already have a midi interface for your desktop.

2 of what? rme9632 on mine.

You should look into MidiMux, Midi LE, Music IO for sending midi directly between your Mac and iPad. These solutions require no special hubs or cables and use the regular 30pin to USB or Lightning to USB cables from apple. They will provide a much more stable, low latency connection than wifi and support all control apps like Lemur and TouchOSC.

They are also incredibly cheap compared to using an iConnect or iRig device. Depending on your particular needs they could be exactly what you need. Soon these same apps will allow routing of audio as well as midi to and from your iOS devices.

PC versions are being worked on too!
