Just bought the VU meter this week.
A compressor, could be a nice addition, I have the Arts Acoustic CL series. so something from Klanghelm, and then the FabFilter Multiband Compressor, then I'll be set in that department.

waves break, but somehow it all makes sense.

What exactly is the "dynamics" knob on the tube mode doing? Is it just a compressor? I want to use the tube mode on a drum buss- just to "warm it up" a little. The cymbals (ride especially) are squashed to hell unless "dynamics" is set all the way on "fast".
What exactly is it Doing? Does anyone know?
I'm not complaining - I just want to understand how it works, and how to set "dynamics" for other things besides drums too...
Thanks

Nobody knows? Why would you want a tube "saturator" to compress the hell out of your cymbals?jbraner wrote:What exactly is the "dynamics" knob on the tube mode doing?
It sounds fine when all the way to the left ("short") - but I'd like to know why

The dynamics knob is meant to control the onset of the saturation. But looking at it just now, the behaviour seems to be reversed in the tube mode compared to the others, as fast in those brings on the effect of the saturation much more quickly, slow lets more of a transient through. It seems to be the other way round in tube mode.
The main reason to have it operate quickly on cymbals/hats is to take the edge off the initial transient or to get the techno overdriven 909 hihat sound.

Thanks for your reply Gamma. Anything after (all the way) fast seems to clamp down the cymbals - like a compressor on 10:1 with a slow attack and a really long release. That's not really what I'm looking for in tube saturation

Are you EQing the cymbals before going into SDRR and is the Frequency Response towards the low end of the scale? If you increase the sizzle and the HF and/or EQ with a low shelf or low cut, the harmonics from the lower range won't wind up squashing the high-end detail of the cymbal, which may be the source of the problem. (Without an example it's hard to tell).

I just put SDRR on a drum buss. I just got it recently and was trying it out.
I was setting up a drum part (Superior Drummer) and was setting up a chorus part with 1/8 note ride cymbal hits. I thought something was wrong with the drums (I was betatesting a new kit) until I realised that SDRR was doing it.
Maybe this just isn't what I thought it was. I just wanted a little "tube warmth" on the whole drum buss...

It's a bit hard to determine what's exactly going on in your specific situation, but here it goes.
One thing to keep in mind is that with any type of saturation/distortion, if you crank the drive up there will be less dynamic range. Thus effectively compressing the signal.
I just did some testing myself and found that hihats get a distinctly different "colour" when using the tube model with some drive. I found that this was mostly due to the harmonics parameter, try setting it towards odd, instead of even.

Hi BDeep,
I've got drive way down at "1" - ie only a tiny bit of drive.
It's the dynamics knob that's compressing really hard - on any setting greater than all the way to "fast"...
I'm just after a subtle effect
That's why I'm questioning why the dynamics knob compresses so much...
