I finally tried the Orion Plat demo last night.

One thing I noticed right off is the inclusion of something I have been wishing for in Reason. You can set up polyphonic patterns for your synths just as you can for a drum machine. Although I do not like the method used to select those patterns, they are there and they are handy. Too bad Synapse does not have a cross grade offer. I would find Orion Platinum 5.5 much more useful than Reason or FL Studio.
One question, will it work as a rewire slave to Sonar?

I think he means the 'receive midi from' option in the vst wrapper (?)
Didn't quite get that one myself..

In Reason Redrum you have four banks (A, B, C, D), each bank with 8 patterns. You do not have any such banks for Subtractor, Malestrom, or the samplers.
In Orion Platinum 5.5 you have pattern banks available for drum machines and synths. You can insert WaspXT, create a variety of bass lines or chord progressions that are assigned to pattern locations, and then paint in your arrangement.

so do you have to write the synth parts linear fashion?Rabid wrote:In Reason Redrum you have four banks (A, B, C, D), each bank with 8 patterns. You do not have any such banks for Subtractor, Malestrom, or the samplers.

ah..
the 'polyphonic' reference threw me off.
a quick hint not in the manual:
use the scroll wheel on your mouse to quickly change your patterns in the Song playlist; this feature was not documented in the manual & I had a really hard time laying/changing patterns till I was told this on the Orion forum by another user.

You can get that same pattern functionality in Reason using the Matrix patter sequencer to drive every synth in Reason, including ReDrum.
But Orion has more pattern memory

Basically, yes. You can copy and paste notes, sections or measures. To me it is cumbersome to work this way on a song that is pattern based. If I am going to do that I prefer to do the tonal parts in Sonar where it is much easier to copy and paste sections.
Linear recording is not bad. It is easy to tweak parts and adjust controller information this way. My complaint is mainly with pattern based song construction. Synthasizer and sampler parts do not give you the same ease as rhythm and rex parts unless you are content with monophonic lines controlled by the Matrix Pattern Sequencer.

I get it..Matrix doesn't allow you to program chords, right? (been awhile since I messed with it..)
Orion's patterns allow as many notes as your synth/CPU can drive..
is that what you mean?

That's it. The Matrix Pattern Sequencer is monophonic. If you want a chord you have to detune the osc's of the synth into a chord. A lot of customers have asked for a polyphonic version of the Matrix Pattern Sequencer.sickle666 wrote:I get it..Matrix doesn't allow you to program chords, right? The Matrix Pattern Sequencer is based on the old analog sequencers. Monophonic note output but with the addition of other controller data. While you only get one note at a time you do have the ability to tweak the filter amount or decay for each individual note. The Orion patterns use a piano roll so you can get polyphonic output on the patterns.

Or create the part in the piano roll, or play the part in. But if you want to use patterns for a polyphonic Malstrom part you do have to use multiple instances of the Patterns Sequencer assigned to multiple instances of Malstrom using the same patch.Kriminal wrote:So if you want to play a chord in say Malestrom, you have to load 3/4/5 instances of it?![]()
Blimey
That's what I do not like. You cannot use pattern mode for chord progressions.

heh..no Krim, Reason's synths ARE polyphonic, but if you don't want to program it's parts in Reason's main sequencer by hand or record it live, the Matrix only offers one note per measure like old school pattern sequencers.
Kinda like ERA, err..exactly like ERA actually..
