I need to explain Diva's 4.

Beautiful sounding synth. Maybe the most beautiful sounding of them all, but it's a one trick pony. It's made to be an analog emulation of a few old synths (don't remember which ones) and that's what you get. Unfortunately, it's not what I want. I'm looking for something with a little more variety. I have enough emulations. And while maybe they don't sound as good as Diva, they're good enough.
I kinda feel the same way about Diva...I know a ton of people are really enamored by it but I just don't see myself buying it anytime soon. Serum is likely next for me since I like the UI and visual feedback, seems like a good workflow for designing sounds from scratch.

Is retrologue on the list of yours? That's a good'n too.
Retrologue came with my Cubase 7 so I don't consider that a "paid" synth either. Yes, I like it a lot and don't use it nearly as much as I should.

You're doing it wrong mr chaoswyrm :hyper:

Sounds may need a bit filtering and fx and tweaking but it pays off.. Especially when trying to make some real instruments emulations. (plucking) Strings and piano type sounds are freaking awesome and off this world. Actually anything where you want some easy evolving (like pads) are super. But again fx and filters in this synths are quite.. Well you'll do better with DAWs own fx.
i dont want to hijack this thread too much...but...

it sounds like were talking about 2 very different synths here. im not doing it "wrong" im just not using it for those kinds of sounds, which i can get better from other synths, and for which its not really intended. i would never even think about going to enzyme for an evolving pad, thats what wusik or psygen is for, and plucks...well i have serum...enzyme cant even begin to compete with those for those kinds of sounds. it would be unfair to even fault it for that, thats how not for those sounds it is.

its intended for creating "different/new" sounds and ear splitting harshness and aggression (with is psycho and danger buttons, complete with gas mask and fall out symbols)...which it does achieve (well the ear splitting and aggression anyway). i mean just look at the factory presets, there are very few patches that dont fall under the "harsh" category, and the marketing is squarely in the industrial and dubstep areas.

thats all fine with me...thats why i got it. its just they all sound too alike. one of its main selling points was its ability to make sounds nothing else can...and unfortunately for me all those sounds are kinda the same.

i do agree with one thing though...it needs a lot of effects on it, as it has a tendency to come off a bit thin and tinny.

who knows...maybe ill give it another chance. maybe my initial disappointment in its (lack of) range and over all sound quality has jaded me against it.

sure...why not? ill spend some more time with it later and see if i can salvage it.

ok...sorry...back to our regularly scheduled program.

Synthsquad is a nice package of synthesizers.

Definitely worth demoing! It has a great modulation system called transfusor that really expands each of their capabilities.

Here is a good sound demo by Aiyn Zahev.

I checked out Synth Squad a long time ago. It was okay but nothing really blew me away. I might go back and take a second look since it's been quite a while.

I think Diva is awesome...sometimes hard on the CPU.

Hive is fantastic and almost there...no complaints.

Sylenth...the no brainer.

But Spire is really a major go-to must have diverse piece of software. That or Synthmaster (which you already have so...Spire).

I'll check Spire out tomorrow. I gave it a quick listen to a while back and wasn't really impressed but I'll give it some more time tomorrow.

In the meantime, I downloaded the Synplant demo earlier and have been playing with it for most of the evening.

Honestly, I'm a little disappointed with the raw sound. Yes, some of the sounds you can get out of this thing are very unusual and maybe there's a place for it in my sound palette, but the sound in general is very glassy and thin. Kind of reminds me of the old PPG Wave, which I know is a great synth and lots of people love it. But that kind of sound really isn't my thing. I prefer synths with a little more meat on them. I'm not a glassy synth fan.

So Synplant will probably be put on the back burner at least until one day when I feel that I really need that kind of sound.

So right now it looks like it's between...

AIR Loom
Oxium
Enzyme

AIR Loom is probably an outside shot even though I liked what I heard because there is no demo available. You either buy it or you don't. After my "disappointment" with Synplant, I'm not willing to take that chance.

About ready to call it a night so more tomorrow.

FMDrive from AlyJames, for the love of criminy!

Sound is very particular, but in terms of emulation, it is much more special than most VSTs. He's actually gone to lengths to duplicate the specific type of distortion that each model of the Genesis\Megadrive added. This is something key that is missing from so many FM projects that seek to emulate this sound.

It's not something that can be modulated, but it does have a bizarre formant mode that pretty much sounds unlike anything I've ever heard. With a little automation TLC, that thing can sound absolutely out of this world, while still being allowed in terms of the Genesis hardware.

I just feel like more people need to get on board with this thing. :tu:
A heaping dose of outrageously goofy synth tracks, scores and chiptunes.

Not really into FM synthesis. I had my fill of it back in the 80s with my DX7. The only reason I have FM8 is because it came with Komplete 9, otherwise it's nothing I would have ever bought on my own.

Yeeouch! Well, FM is definitely not for everyone (anymore), hehe. When sequenced or played well, I still can't get enough of the sound.

Anyway, carry on.

When you suggested a Casio I was gonna laugh but I kept an open mind and checked out the audio demos at Plugin Boutique, which is the only place you can get this.

Not bad sounding. I give it a 3.5. But it's not something I'd run out to get.

I tried :ud: at least I did laugh :)
I also suggested Sunrizer looks a bit better
