I totally share your opinion about the song being the most important thing (i consider myself a songwriter first and foremost), but i think that my entry proves a bit that a "real" song doesn't actually prevent the track scoring high - I composed it completely without the computer and I would sing it while playing guitar until I had a finished song.
The result is a "Musette Waltz" (according to rockingricky) and I kind of expected it to sink, but then you never know the enigma that is OSC voting :D . I'm still not sure why this contribution scored so much better than my previous track for Hive. Maybe less competition, Photonic and Jasinski didn't take part this time, they would've sent me downstairs for sure :hihi:

Well, the other extreme would be like build a dozen of patches, play a 4 second Am chord for each, vote the best sound :)

Imho the contest, even if it is not a songwriting one, needs good music to make the patches shine. Even heard a good synth sound ruined by a horrible demo 'cause the music was'nt the right one? Here we have everything: ppl making good sounds, and making the right music to let the sounds shine.
This is why (always imho) your walts scored high. It was the right song for your sounds. I could'nt sort any good from your patches, you did.

being my dream to be able to "emulate" my old SQ1 (which is called a "rompler", right?) and having it a synth structure like this:

what should i pick? :help: If i'm right, both Synthmaster and Wusik 7 are able to use custom waves for OSCs. So it goes down to what is more similar to the SQ1..... i'll apreciate any tip

I would go with Synthmaster. It has just about every synth engine you can think of. It can do a pretty decent SQ1 if you work with it.

The GUI is ugly as sin and not the easiest to get around at first, but I think you're going to love the sound of it.

I think you'd find Synthmaster flexible enough to do just about anything you want. Wusik is a good program, too, for sure but the amount of ways you can route things in Synthmaster is really amazing. You could always try out the demos of each...

First: Congrats to Richard Semper :D :tu:

Second: Congrats to all the winners and simply everybody who has joined :)

I wished to say: "I knew it!!!" But that is not true, because I gave each of the five winners 5 points :lol:

I feel happy for each of the 5, because all have made an outstanding job and so it is well deserved.

Third: My own ranking. To be honest: Guys that has been a bit shocking for me. I expected myself to be somewhere in the very last quarter for sure. I feel sorry for some who has a lower rating than me, because I think their songs are better than mine. Two of them are even something like idols for me like DoctorBob and Oxebe for example. This is why my own ranking feels a bit strange for me. On the plus side it motivates me to improve. I will take this result as motivation to improve and thank you for being so kind to me.

Last but not least: I will also thank TrojakEW and make the announcement that Eclipisis is on the Beat DVD this month which means: Soon a lot of people will use it :D

Thanks to all for this great experiance (although it was very exhausting too :lol: ) I hope to see you all again at OSC`s in the future. Thanks for all your help, I have learnt a lot just from this one OSC and thanks to bjporter that he has taken all my emotional outbursts with serenity :lol: :hug:

Me too! But now retired coz I'm basically an old fart! Was Chairman of Eurographics UK Chapter for 6 years (see Eurographics.org), programmer since the mid 60's (early assembly languages, through Fortrans, Algols, Modulas up to Prolog, Poplog, Lisp (oh those "megabrackets"). Taught database technologies, computer graphics (opengl - best fun though writing code for a Dec GT-40). Built and ran a M$ Compute Cluster (mainly running parallel Matlab programs!!!). Ran some early high performance networking stuff on UKLight (surround sound recording and playback between York and Edinburgh). Built and ran mixed windows and Linux Condor clusters - that was fun.

Crashed my first machine in 1966!

For me the 'song' is what counts the most, I always try to make something I like and want to play myself. If I am happy with it that is reward enough! The rest is the learning how, and learning from the examples set by others here and the great community feedback is invaluable.

What the tracks have in common though they are so different.

1) Slick sound. Very "commercial" sounding.

2) Pro production. Excellent stereo placing of instruments. Levels perfect.

3) Arrangement not static. Many changes throughout but not obviously so. More like a woven tapestry with things coming in and going out and then coming in again.

4) More riff and mood based than melody based. Melody is almost secondary to the overall frame so nothing really distracts from the rest of what's going on. So you get the whole picture and all the little nuances. In other words, nothing sticks out like a sore thumb. All the parts fit, like a perfect jigsaw puzzle.

5) Musical structure is solid. No weak parts. Enough changes so that it's not monotonous but still consistent enough so that it's not too chaotic. This is a very difficult line to walk and these guys do it masterfully.
Thank you for this highly complimentary evaluation! I could apply most of it to many previous winners, and it helps me to realise and understand what I got right this time.
Regarding item 4 - I am a big fan of melody, but this time decided to leave out any melodic lead in favour of lots of filter movement and automation. Even the bass line plays the same note throughout most of the track. It seemed any addition of melody or variation in pitch only detracted from the overall sound. I think Focus is the key. Usually I try to do too much at once, using chord pads, melody lines, and complicated twists all at the same time, resulting in a jumbled muddy mess. Still learning here :)

Congratulations to the winners!

As my first OSC, I'm really happy with the whole process and my placing. I was a bit shocked that we could actually see what everyone scored everyone else, it's brutal but it's great!
