The sampling in Geist is fun and makes it easy to sample your synths and make kits. I never used to do that before I purchased Geist.
You can chain patterns and construct songs... you can trigger different patterns from your midi keyboard and record that so you can easily improv performances.
Also, the mouse input is excellent for when you need it... for example if you want to make a string of 16th notes that start at full velocity and fade to 0 velocity, trivial... click drag with a key command done.
Geist is great!

I'm sure it is. I watched the video and it looks really deep. I just don't want to sink $250 into a drum machine. If it's on sale some day (I see it was once for 50 bucks...wow) I'll definitely pick it up.pdxindy wrote:As has been mentioned, it is often on sale...wagtunes wrote:$250 for a drum machine? Well, I really need to stop looking at stuff because I always end up disappointed when I do.
After somebody mentioned Geist and I checked it out, I couldn't help looking at DCAM Synth Squad. Yes, it's $250 but it's 3 synths and a wrapper.
Love the sound of them all.
But 2 problems.
1) The demo is 32 bit. Why they'd have a 64 bit plugin but only 32 bit for the demo is beyond me. So testing it out on my PC is pointless. If it doesn't work, which it probably won't, no way do I take a chance on buying it.
2) From what I can tell, the GUI (the synth is 6 years old) was made in the days when a lot of GUIs were very small. While this one appears to be bigger than the Arturia nightmares, they don't appear to be that much better.
So here I have 3 synths whose sounds I really love and can't even consider getting them.
Oh well. Such is life.

Btw have you tested FAW circle? It's semimodular VA+wavetable (plus you can make your own and load them) and very easy and flexible. Version 2 is also around the corner and it's only 49e atm.

Download the Bitwig demo and you can try 32 bit demos...wagtunes wrote:Well, I really need to stop looking at stuff because I always end up disappointed when I do.

Synth Squad is awesome... some of my favorites... and there is a version 2 announced so maybe there is info on expected release in that thread. Bigger GUI is one of the main requests from users.

If I remember correctly you said Syn'X was a bit expensive.
Well....here's an alternative I think you might like

Geist is great, very inspirational and much more than just a drum machine. Spark 2 also has a nice workflow using the controller, and the modular synthesis is very good for drum design if you want to create your own sounds, although many classic drum machines have been modeled already and they sound very good.

I have Spark 2 and like it (with sparkle controller)...is there any reason to bother with Geist? I got GeistLite, but it doesn't let me drag & drop clips into Bitwig...but it's my understanding from some videos I watched that the full version does.
~ good luck ~

I find them both very different, I really love in Geist the way that you can switch patterns in real-time like playing an instrument, and this is multiplied by 8 engines. Geist can make something out of nothing very easily, I tend to make a bunch of patterns for a few engines with different samples etc... and then jam/record them via DAW midi tracks, I never use the internal song sequencer. Incidentally I also have my Spark Controller (the big version) mapped to a good chunk of Geist which works pretty well, although I don't tend to use it too much because of the desktop space.SoundGoddess wrote:I have Spark 2 and like it (with sparkle controller)...is there any reason to bother with Geist? Spark on the other hand I like mainly for building drum patterns on the fly it works great via the hardware. But you only get 16 slots vs 8 x 16 with Geist (not counting velocity layers) which is why I probably see/use them differently.
Not sure on the drag n drop issue with Bitwig as I don't own it, you could look on fxpansion forum to see if there's a solution? It seems an odd thing to leave out of a lite version.

I actually downloaded the demo today for the first time.david.beholder wrote:+1 to Diva

Here are my feelings on the synth. Please understand from my original post that I'm looking for something with more unusual sounds and lots of modulation routings.
Diva sounds great. There is no question about it. It's clean and fat.
It's also stuck between 1972 and 1982 in the meat and potatoes LP/HP filter and basic analog/digital VCO/DCO waveforms.
In other words, it's a true retro synth that you can mix and match modules for and make something slightly different. But only slightly.
It's still basically the synths that I grew up with in the Moog and Roland families.
You're not getting unusual textures out of it. You've essentially brought home a Minimoog.
I don't need another Minimoog or Jupiter or Oberheim or whatever. I have plenty of those emulations, and while they don't quite have the sound quality of Diva, they're good enough for my purpose. Plus, I have Zebra 2 which isn't exactly a poor sounding synth.
In short, Diva just doesn't add anything that I can see paying $179 for.
Maybe if it went on sale one day for 50% off, yeah, I might get it. But that's not going to happen anytime soon, if ever.
So I still stand by my original decision that Diva just isn't a synth that gives me what I'm looking for, as good as it is for what it does.
