MusicRadar has expanded the list to 12, OBXD still on top:

Tal Noise Maker three spots above Synth 1 ? Utter Bullsh*t..............

OBXD is a nice freeware synth but the BEST ? No.

All such lists are.
CM put OBXD top of the pile. Beat fairly trashed it.
It's been in my top 5 - payware included - since early beta. None of my other favourite synths made MR's top dozen.
But this is an OBXD thread, so - Well done, 2DaT! Thoroughly deserved.

I've ported OBXD and couple of other DAW plugins to run in web browsers.

Interesting as a proof of concept, and for quick demo purposes. Latency is high though. MIDI in doesn't seem to work on both Mac and PC, but computer kbd input works.

I'm not sure the list was supposed to be in any kind of order. It describes OBXD as "One of the best of the current crop of free virtual synths..". And the list itself is called "12 of the best free VST/AU plugin synths".

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated!

I agree, browser latencies are still too high for a responsive feel. Luckily the forthcoming W3C spec will improve things. The present demo can achieve 20-30 ms when choosing "bypass SPN" from the FX page, and then setting the FX slider to 100% wet. Midi reduces latencies as well. Need to fix it asap, sorry about messing it up.

BTW, It would be great to know if anyone experienced audio dropouts? I guess JS garbage collection or running out of CPU power with higher polyphony can cause some issues. The demo buffer size is 512 samples.

Hello,

This synth is great but there's no preset manager :
* I am on live 9 and in the instrument drop down menu I have only a long list of "default"
* How to save a preset that I have created with it?

Thanks in advance,

T.

Sorry, I just discovered that Live had a built in preset browser at the left of the preset list...never used it before today it works well 8) Is there a way to map a default bank to avst by this way?

Post

is anyone else hoping that in a future release you would be able to right-click to open up a menu that would include "load preset" because there is no way to open presets while using the synth inside Kore

All the synths which have not their own preset manager are a drawback for many people. A true no-go. Myself with Reaper and Mulab I can make without internal preset manager in OBXD, but it's not so easy and I don't feel that so natural, because it forces to make (and make again) some configurations on EACH DAW while only one configuration should be enough whatever the DAW if all was in the synth itself. So I understand the strong difficulties it causes to many users. And even if I can do without... I tend to choose synths which have their own preset manager (and their own MIDI Learn management) and leave away all the others even when they sound very good, because I don't like when a synth must be married to a DAW. A synth should be totally independent of the DAWs. The developers should think that these two features are a mandatory criteria for many users. OBXD has a MIDI Learn function, that's right... but the lack of internal preset management is a real problem. Deal-breaker ("rédhibitoire" as we say in French). Today I don't use anymore OBXD. I like a lot its sounds... but I prefer to use another tool which has its own preset (and bank) management even if it is not a full OB-X emulation, because it sound nice for me AND it has its own preset management. I'll come back to OBXD (without leaving away the other one) the day it really has this feature.

Except the nice sounds, it got features that you expect only to find in payware:

-It comes as VST2/3 32/64 bit for both PC & Mac
-Resizeable GUI
-Released in 2006, it gets updated, latest was 2013

This synth is a crowd pleaser in the hands of a good songwriter. It won't blow minds, rather give the audience a peaceful moment in old loved familiar hands.
