I have trax ranging from 76BPM to 180 BPM, but most commonly use 120-140 BPM.

Whats your BPM of choice?

Post

120 - 140, round here too, altho I notice my trax tend to be a touch faster than yours, I guess you're more 120 - 130 whereas I'm 130 - 140... :)

Post

:-o 45-90 generally but for some reason the last 4 pieces have been 57 :?

I noticed the 'breaks' trax tend to be 136 ish. My faster Acid ones tend to be 140 BPM, but generally its 120-130. Prob cos OP opens at 120 :?

I have got one that is 56 BPM, a classical kinda piece, and one that is 224BPM, but its played at 112BPM with the paino roll set to 32nd's not 16th's.

much of my pop stuff is around 105, although the last couple have been around 120. the spacey stuff drops down to 50-60; glitchy ones go 150-160

A funny thing happended the other day actually. Whilst the missus was in labour and hooked up to monitors, I was listening to the babies heartbeat and on three occasions I correctly guessed the BPM

Must be the DJ in me, how sad

for me, it's between 120-140.

I did my final year project (Psychology degree) about this kind of thing.

A chap called Piet Vos did a study in 1979 which had people just tap at whatever speed they felt happy with. He found that most people would tap at speeds which would translate into bar lengths (3/4 or 4/4) of around 1500ms with small reasonably standard deviation (spread of results).

I followed this up by trying to see if perception of rhythm in music was bottom-up (the listener actually takes cues from the music as to where the bar lines fall), or top-down (the listener imposes their own bias on how they interpret the music).

I found that cues are generally taken from the music, but if there is just a melody then the listener takes a lot longer to get into a steady pattern than when there is other musical information presented as well (harmonic changes, etc).

There were a few instances of 6/8 being re-interpreted as 4/4, but not much, and these were cases where the tempo was a bit faster.

Psychology is great for proving what is blinkin' obvious in the first place!

Interestingly, there was no discernable difference in ability between those with musical training, and those without.

So there ya go!

Most of my stuff doesn't even have beats! But I do some idm/breakcore, usually ranges 190-240 bpm.
