I didn't watch it either until after you said that, I mean it's under three minutes right so why not? I dont know who he is, but he needn't speak for me because we differ too much on the subject. Meanwhile on a lighter note, he looks just like KvR member and friend zero crossingjancivil wrote:I guess reading this thread obviates needing to see the actual video. Thanks, guys.

Well, Barry said it's one half of a dialectic and the antithesis presents in the other video. I believe in tone, so I don't really need thesis/antithesis/synthesis to sort me.Hink wrote:I didn't watch it either until after you said that, I mean it's under three minutes right so why not? Seems kind of masturbatory.
I abandoned classical guitar out of lack of enough money to replace an instrument that was stolen, so if there is an _actual_ statement <expensive = better is a lie> (there is too much irony for me at teh KVRs, I get tired of wondering) I can testify to the truth [of expensive is better]. Not necessarily better, but when you get to playing in halls, you will not fare well with a cheap instrument. You might get a worthy instrument for nothing, but a cheap instrument means they cheaped out on materials and otherwise.

Tone is probably one of those things we stress about when the real deficiencies appear insurmountable.

Not having a thumb like Wes Montgomery's is def. a deficiency when you're Wes Montgomery. Me, I wasn't trying to be Wes Montgomery at all. So I 'stressed' on tone when tone was the deficiency at hand. I was trying to find out about my deficiencies and that was brought up, so...

Guitarists are well-known for obsessing about their tone, and other guitarist's tones as well. I understand to a certain extent (e.g. I have very strong opinions about how snare drums sound), but there are so many things to obsess over with an electric guitar (guitar, guitar components, effects, amps, speakers, speaker cabinets, strings, and so on ad infinitum) that it can easily turn into a vicious circle. Of course, as with anything, the way to avoid this is to know what you are after before you go looking for it.
So I would say tone isn't a lie, so much as it a possible sand trap.

On a side note I recently obtained a video of Gary moore about 7 months before he died (Montreaux Jazz festival, I know I spelled it wrong) and when he played an acoustic he was using a Line 6 acoustic variax which surprised me

I agree with him.
There are so many tunes where you know an individual part would sound shitty but in the context of a tune it fits.
Its called mixing.
Tone only matters if your playing by yourself or in a sparse mix IMO.
Often you need weedy sounds as they fit

You might get a worthy instrument for nothing, but a cheap instrument means they cheaped out on materials and otherwise. You did just hit the nail on the head though, the guy in the vid is talking about electric guitars and the truth is whether it be a classical acoustic or just an acoustic boy does tone matter. It's not a myth when people say there is a huge tone difference with a solid top as opposed to a laminate top. You cant do much to change things if the guitar itself is flat sounding like many laminate top acoustics. With an electric I am blessed with the skills to be able to modify the guitar for what I want tone wise. Within reason of course, I'm not going to get an SG to sound just like an ES 335 because they are two different beasts, but I can (and obviously really enjoy) set electrics up they way I want them.
On a side note I recently obtained a video of Gary moore about 7 months before he died (Montreaux Jazz festival, I know I spelled it wrong) and when he played an acoustic he was using a Line 6 acoustic variax which surprised me
Yeah...I found that as well here. Tone matters a lot when you are doing a solo/sparse mix. But when is dealing with high gain/distortion/all out noise core it may not even matter.
As to him being Canadian...

There's plenty of good guitar players with crap tone and plenty of OK or mediocre guitar players with great tone . Me I'm in the OK to Good category with a steel string acoustic as well as Great with tone . But on an electric I am a crap player and crap tone and dont care and will not chase it further ... . On Bass its all in the fingers and palm muting not much tone to chase there ..... I feel sorry for the electric guitar players that chase the gear new amps pickups pedals and end up dissappionted ...
