'Do you live around other humans? Do you use roads? Plumbing? Electricity? Do you visit the doctor? Did you go to school? Do you benefit in any way from the existence of law enforcement?'

Do you use the internet, which was built by human society? Do you post on KVR? You can take this denial as far as you want, but you appear to be writing to me in English, which was developed by society and apparently taught to you. This is all just arguing for the sake of arguing. She Changed Her Mind wrote:'Do you live around other humans? Do you use roads? Plumbing? Electricity? Do you visit the doctor? Did you go to school? There are laws against stealing software. There are no laws to prohibit someone from being unsuccessful in business and filing for bankruptcy. Is the concept of legal vs. illegal really that complicated?T-CM11 wrote:What if you pirate software and don't buy it? The answer is simple: bad things sometimes happen in life. Maybe nobody should become a software developer. Maybe it's a real shame that things don't always work out the way we plan. Entropy is a bitch.deastman wrote:

There are also laws that prohibit homosexuality. What does that say about laws?deastman wrote: There are laws against stealing software. There are no laws to prohibit someone from being unsuccessful in business and filing for bankruptcy. Is the concept of legal vs. illegal really that complicated?

This line of conversation is wandering way off topic. From this last statement, one possible interpretation is that you advocate the use of pirated software.T-CM11 wrote:There are also laws that prohibit homosexuality. I don't think there is a topic really. So what?

I think this is a pretty pointless "topic"/conversation overall. This really isn't new news to a lot of people. There's very little chance that anyone will change their current viewpoint. And there's also very little chance that something major will come of this. The most that's happened is a few people who didn't know about this now do know. Life goes on. The world goes on.
But this is KVR. No, this is the internet. People will continue to go on about it nonetheless. Someone will find something to keep it going. Surely your time could be better spent making music or doing something else more productive. Or not.

To play or not to play. That's the question

I'm not advocating anything. I'm pointing out your "Befehl ist Befehl" attitude. But I guess you don't see that and like sticking to a simple black&white pirates vs. law abiding citizens view.deastman wrote:This line of conversation is wandering way off topic. Anyway, I don't care for Avicii, or other DJs, so I'm off to a more interesting topic.

I'll admit it right up front: it irks me that some DJs make crazy money and some kind of fame just by playing other people's material in public

I don't hate on the rich. I hate on what some of them did to get there and the attitudes they present about it all. And yes, it matters to me because society shit on me while I was playing the game ethically and legally. Society shouldn't reward bad behavior, but it clearly does when so many people are willing to dismiss ethical issues so easily because "there are more important things to care about". People climbing the ladder by stepping on others shouldn't be rewarded by offering them more rungs to climb and more backs and hands to step on, but that's exactly what our complacent civilization does. I can't tell if it's because those in authority refuse to police the very behavior that put them there, or if it's because the ones who want to get to the same place are more than willing to behave the same way to get there (and therefore refuse to condemn it).
It's sad to me that humanity still needs so much prodding and legal cattle chutes just to be ethical to each other. We are just selfish animals, like all other forms of life. That would be understandable if not for all the haughty "better than" self worship our species engages in when comparing itself to other species. It's like watching the vile nationalists in my country bitching about the vile nationalists in other countries.
