Hey Guys,
I need your help desperately.
I have a Folder on my portable Harddisk, where I save all my mp3s. As I get my Music mostly from Amazon or from my CDs that I rip, everyone is actually able to copy this on his portables. Nobody did this till now, but nevertheless I want my music to be copy-protected. On the other hand I want to be able to play my files on every other system.
Do you know a way of making my mp3s being playable but not copyable from my hard-disk.
Thanks in advance!!
Edit: I'm on Windows 7, Windows Vista and also Windows XP with this HDD.

I think the lack of answers is because what you ask is hard, if not impossible. The only two solutions that come to mind are encrypting software, and protected usb keys. I really wouldnt worry about people copying your music. I would just be more mindful of who is listening to the music, and where i leave my usb keys.
Here are examples of what im talking about. I have no experience with either;

This (bitlocker) comes default with most modern Windows versions:

In order to read a drive, you first have to enter a password.
Very transparent, works on all Windows machine (no extra software install required! )

Since you mentioned that you will be accessing the music on XP systems, and it seems youll be going the route of Bitlocker (not released for XP), this link will show you the easy steps to access your files on XP (since it will look different than on 7).

Edit: and with most things you wrap in encryption, i would recommend creating a backup copy of your music, obviously not on the same usb key, and without encryption.

I was under the impression that Bitlocker wouldnt disable copying, but simply encrypt the data so that it wasnt accessible without a password. In other words, if you allow someone to listen to the music, you will need to input the password, which is unlocking them (and allow copy / paste). I am not too familiar with Bitlocker though, so i could very well be incorrect. Let us know how it goes, and good luck!

That is correct.xNiMiNx wrote:I was under the impression that Bitlocker wouldnt disable copying, but simply encrypt the data so that it wasnt accessible without a password.
If you want the music played, you have to enable read access on the files one way or another. And if they can be read, it also can be copied. Not a lot you can do about that, other than guarding the physical drive: never leave it unattended!

Ah, I just read that encrypting a USB volume with BitLocker is only available in the Ultimate and Enterprise editions of Windows 7. If you have access to a machine with that version (at school or work they should have the Enterprise edition) then you can encrypt the drive there and use it on a machine with the Personal edition.
In theory that is... I'd try it first with a simple $10 memory stick that's backed up first

Yep, i was under the impression that others listening was ok, but copying not ok. Thats why i said it was a pretty hard to find a solution.BertKoor wrote:And if they can be read, it also can be copied. The software & hardware examples i linked previously claim to be able to do that, but again, i have no experience with either. The software has a trial, which you could see if it works as intented and properly for your needs. You may run into some issues though, like having to type the password at every song begining, which may be very annoying.
If you do try the trial, i would follow Berts recommendation of using a cheap (near disposable) usb key.
