I'm in discussion with the other members of Dan Island as to which genre our music fits into....i'd like to here your opinions. One track is obvioulsy reggae so you can ignore it but a general genre for the others would be interesting
thanks.
thanks.

Jangle pop?
Listened to When we were young and If I could fly. Reminded me a bit of Crowded House. On allmusic.com one of the categories they get slotted under is Adult Alternative Pop/Rock, but I can't imagine you want to be called that.
[edit]Just read through the definition of AAP/R on allmusic, after jangle pop, they also say acoustic folk-rock, which could maybe apply.
Cheers,
Steve

Well, I hope I didn't insult you, then.MacN wrote:Thanks man for taking the time to listen....I quite like adult alternative pop/rock though
It's just seems like such a broad term, like saying music of the musical variety to be listened to by people.

No not at all, the term is often used to describe bands like Crowded House, the Replacements, REM, Robyn Hitchcock, etc.MacN wrote:Jangly pop sounds annoying though. Hmmm maybe that was what you meant...
Best not to add the 'y' though, jangly seems more annoying than jangle. Acoustic folk-rock seems less annoying.

I just listened to "When We Were Young"
Soft pop rock seems to fit...
I always hate having to answer that question...

Labels are really usefull when applied to canned soup. Otherwise you don't know what's inside. Labels as applied to music are much less usefull, and are mainly a marketing tool.
How about simply making music without worrying about what radio stations it would in theory be played on if you end up as a massive commercial success?

Although, as you say, it is useful for marketing. Stuff like bio sheets for press packages, tour announcements, demos, etc.Labels are really usefull when applied to canned soup.
