This is bloody amazing. I own a JX-10, which is basically two JX-8P's in one synth, I have an eprom upgrade in it that makes it possible to load single JX-8P patches, I did a comparison, and my mind is blown. It's incredibly close, only major thing I've noticed is that there's a slight 'click' on note-off on some patches that isn't there on the hardware. You can hear it especially in a patch called Jazz Guitar. Couldn't get rid of the click by adjusting the envelope. Want to test a bit more but just wanted to say to the developer, awesome work! The Soundtrack patch, probably the patch the JX-10 is most famous for (Twin Peaks, other Angelo Badalamenti stuff) is SPOT ON. I mean, it sounds like a JX-8P/JX-10, just cleaner because of the all-digital DSP.

Yeah I noticed that, couldn't get rid of it. I put it down as a temporary issue Martin is likely aware of...

Yes, there also is sometimes a click when a note fades out. It seems to be related with the mechanism sending unused voices to sleep.

I am trying to hunt the bug down...

I've noticed it happens when the gate closes when you've got the Amp (VCA) section set to Gate (instead of Env). On patches where clicking occurs, the click goes away when I switch the amp to envelope. Seems to only happen in gate mode.

Did further comparisons, totally impressed. BTW some of the sysex collections at super-jx.com have quite a few old JX-8P patches as well, in case it hasn't been mentioned. The JX-10 is enjoying a bit of a renaissance due to a clever programmer who's selling new eproms for them with upgraded MIDI and other stuff. It's possible to split JX-10 patches into two JX-8P patches, need to look how to do that, though.

Congratulation to ML for having his VSTi, PG-8X, chosen for this month's One Synth Challenge (OSC #75!).

I look forward to hearing what these talented KVR members can do with it. Judging from past OSCs, we will be pleasantly surprised.

There is no documentation from the developer, and the "readme" and other text files are from other people, and not necessarily even related to the synth or the patches.

Hi Steve,

I can see how things are a bit confusing, when just looking into this thread once in a while and not following all the time.

The plugin is still in beta testing phase. Therefore, there is not yet a proper place to collect patches, and the download location for the plugin is only the temporary solution via dropbox.

Once everything is smoothed out (and there are still some issues with the plugin, ranging from broken functionality, to fine adjustments of the sound, which need to be sorted out), I will update my web page as the proper 'home' of the plugin, with more clear download links. I will then also convert and sort all patches, and upload them to the KVR database. Currently there is a terrible mix of patches for the old and the new version.

I see that the lack of documentation can be a problem (as there are some aspects of the plugin which are not immediately clear) and I will write some proper documentation.

Cheers,
Martin
Well, maybe Sonar is having a problem with the plug-in, but I can't get it to work. I put the .DLL into the same folder as the other instrument plug-ins, ran Sonar's plug-in manager/mangler...but it doesn't find it. Exit Sonar, restart it, try again, and...nothing.

I'll try to download the .DLL again. Maybe it was corrupted during the download. I've done this hundreds of times over the years. Something like this is usually just a corrupt .DLL.

Steve

EDIT: Nope. After scrolling a few pages back here to find the link to the original Dropbox download (not the mediafire link that doesn't work, and not the links in Martin's signature), I tried again from the Facebook page. Found and downloaded the only 64-bit DLL on the Dropbox site (dated April 29). Sonar still doesn't see it.

Thanks anyway, Martin. I'm glad it's working well for others, and I wish you continued success with it! :)

Here's some of my stuff: https://soundcloud.com/shadowsoflife. If you hear something you like, I'm looking for collaborators.

Martin, will clicks when adjusting chorus parameters be gone in the official version? :)

I use the latest version of PG8X in Sonar X3 Producer and it works fine. 32-bit PC with Windows 7. One thing I did was put the DLL into its own folder, then add some presets I downloaded in that same folder. Then put that same folder with all those in it into the Cakewalk VST folder.

One source of the problem could be permissions of the folder.
The plugin is trying to write the "pg8x.ini" file, when starting up the first time. I have not yet tried what happens when it fails to write that.

Please, try to make sure that you have write permissions.

I am honoured that the pg8x has been chosen for this month's OSC, and I am very much looking forward to the submissions.

The timing is a bit awkward for me, as I will be away from my computer and my keyboards for the next 4 weeks, which also means that I cannot participate myself...

On the other side, it is probably not a bad thing that during the challenge, I will not be able to update the plugin, as it might be unfair, if people work on a project, and I update the plugin half-way through.

Anyway, good luck to all participants!

Post

Other plugins had some issue and were updated during the OSC, it was not a problem but an advantage :)

Also, i find interesting to see where the VST developer could go withing an OSC.
So, in the end, i'll miss you anyway :)

I loaded the plugin to Sonar 7 (64bit) using JBridge. The synth loads okay but I am having trouble with the sliders. I try to move with the mouse but they are unresponsive for several attempts. They finally do move but it is frustrating and really slows down the process of working with it. Any suggestions?
