I Don't Know Where To Ask This About Midi Midi Midi

hopefully this exist, i'm kind of a midiphobe...at heart, I'm running xp, do any of you know of an app that will allow me to use my midi controller setup globaly with whatever app I'm using it with???

my dilema:

I'd Like to use my midi controller with ableton Live but be able to assign the knobs and faders to parameters globaly and then be able to just change tracks and have the same controllers already assigned
for said track. currently you have to assign everything individualy, which takes up alot fo controller realstate.
