jens, yes, I totally agree, just my stupid semantics hope that people refer to it as more-than-just-a-sequencer, it really feels like a creative instrument to me. But hten again I've wanted something like this for live performance for sooooo long. Maybe I'm still just giddy

DHR, please register @ ableton and report those crashes. They've done an amazing job of actually being responsive and squashing the bugs. If you have a broadband connection it takes minimal time to send the crash logs to them

If it sounds good it is good.

Ok, are there things that "normal" sequencers like Cubase SX/Sonar/Logic can do that Live can't do??

Wow, my eyes are glazing over with all this Pro24 talk...
Anyway, i am interested in the linear sequencing side of things too as i am soon to replace my Cubase VST 5 for Mac OS9 and i'm buggered if i'm getting SX (look at the SX/Mac forums and you'll see it's not going down a storm), so i want to change platforms. i could go Logic but it confuses the hell out of me and something new like Live4 looks like it has more creative possiblities (plus i could use it live too).
So is Live4 up to it yet (VSTis and all)?

I have reported back to them, although I haven't heard back yet! They have responded pretty quick though... A few burning questions:
1. In session view, when you press the space bar, it seems to start the arrange view playback... Not the clips in session view? Which is what I'd like to do if I've been recording clips in session view? Hmmm...
2. Sometimes, when you record a clip (session view) then adjust it, it seems to lose time with the drum loop playing... either Impulse or audio loop... I know it's tied to the transport bar setting, but if you set that on BAR, it should sync all clips with that loop, but that's someting that can be played with creatively I guess?
3. I still haven't figured out what the overdub button does in relation to session clips and arrange recordings... I read something about being able to play along with clips in a track from a track that has the record buttons only, but I can''t seem to get that to work?? For instance if I have a drum clip playing in track 2, and I want to play along with it in track 1, but there is a clip already in slot 1 of track 1... to silence that while playig along with track 2, WITHOUT hitting the record button?? like I said, a burning question!
Anyone...

how should it know which of the clips you want it to play? - or am I missing something?DHR53 wrote:1. In session view, when you press the space bar, it seems to start the arrange view playback... Forget list editors, transpose, legato, bla bla, all that
editor-funcs (cubase) and much more.
But I don't care. Live-mixes sound organic -
because everything's there when you need and want it.
This is the charme of Live (2 cent).

The session view and arrange view always play at the same time. This is by design. This makes it easy to record what you're doing. Look into the punch in and punch out feature if you want to avoid overwriting something in the arrange view.DHR53 wrote:I have reported back to them, although I haven't heard back yet! Not sure about this one. I've noticed that some clips, even if started right on bar, sound a little off unless they start at the beginning of a multi-bar loop. Are any of your loops longer than 1 bar? Also make sure your loop start marker is at the beginning of the loop if it sounds like it's out of sync.DHR53 wrote: 2. With the overdub button on and a track armed for midi input, any notes you play are recorded into the currently active midi clip as you play. It's a little bit like punch-in recording in other sequencers. With the overdub button off you can play anything and it won't affect the active clip. This is mainly useful for practicing a riff or playing live alongside an existing midi clip.DHR53 wrote: 3. Yeah? I think it's horrible. Especially when you want to zoom vertically and horizontaly. And I find myself correcting the horizontal scrollposition all the time when I want to zoom in on a certain point (e.g. the corner of a region).jens wrote:I find zooming in Live's linear sequencer (actually I currently only own Remix) rather easy once you're used to it.
With a magnifying glass like in Logic you define the area you want to see with one action: Click&Drag.
With Live's action its more like approximating all the time to the zooml evel you need.
Then, you can't store you favourite three or more zoom levels to access them quickly by one hit of a key(command), you can't navigate thru sequence of navigation snapshots, etc. etc.
Certainly Live has to catch up in that area.

When there are clips selected in session view, if you hit space bar it should start playing the clips... sometimes it starts the cursor moving in arrange overview, but the clips in session don't play... semms like a focus thing to me, but maybe I don't get something??

Generally the arrangement is playing, but when you activate (play) a clip in Session view, then it will play instead of the Arrange track. You may notice that the square next to the "OVR" button turns red. This is to indicate that what you hear is not completely the Arrangement, but some clips from session view are currently overriding their according Arrange tracks. Click the red square, and you'll hear the arrangement again. Click the record button and you can overwrite Arrange tracks from within Session view.DHR53 wrote:1. They only play when their play button is lit (green), not when they ar simply selected.DHR53 wrote:When there are clips selected in session view, if you hit space bar it should start playing the clips...

O.K. maybe I'd like to be either in Session view or Arrange... One or the other, without this focus thing constantly popping up! Seems like if I want to record the session into arrange, I could just select a button and turn it on.. otherwise the controls would be for the view that is active... It would be less confusing for me anyway... I mean there is a global record, a clip record etc. I'm aware of the dual purpose approach and the arrange change button etc. but, I think that now there is midi, they should seperate the two views logically for people who want to use one or the other with the option to record sessions into arrange too... but with dedicated controls...

Highlight the area you want to zoom in on and hit the + key, Live will zoom in on that area alone without you having to scroll along the Overview. That's in Live 4 anyway, not sure about 3.Yeah?
