the mix & mastering side needs some tweakings yet

this is really cool, the drums kind of remind me of Stewart Copeland.

the bass and organ give it a "continental reggae" feel

That motif that begins at :14, and returns throughout is quite memorable!

It kept going through my head, so I had to come back and play it. I like the drums, good stuff. The only thing I don't like is the ride cymbals.

to be honest, the main beat was easily made thanks to a (free) drum loop grabbed on a Future Music cover CDRom...

the ride cymbals were home programmed (ns_kit7), tho... why don't you like them?

I would dirty up the beat a bit, make it a bit more "vintage" sounding. If you have a tape saturator, analog-type compressor, amp simulator, and a spring reverb, I would toss the beat through a chain of those type effects, and try to get it as retro sounding as possible. Or alternatively, if you have a few vintage break comps lining around, you could just replace the hits from the track with those from a breakbeat. Either way, the drums on the track sound too clean as is. The rest is fine, but for me when I listen to downtempo I want the beats as chunky and big as possible. Think nasty!

i'll try your ideas. however i must say i'm quite happy with the drums as they are. but who knows?

I don't know..actually it's only in the first section, they seem just a bit too loud, or have too much sizzle to my taste. but I notice when they come in for the second part they work well and you fade them out. It's only in the first part that I don't like them. Of course, I've been listening to this several times now, and I like the whole thing so much, that this is quite a minor point.
rather funky in a strange way, and a cool hook as well.

I'm gonna have to agree with atomic-afro here. The drums (as nice as they sound) are way too clean for the composition.

But I also agree with Gary; that sequence will stay and haunt me somehow.

The track needs body somehow in the lower end, perhaps some big dark drone?

i'm still not convinced by the big, nasty drums, but i'll definitely give it a try.

i'll see what i can do with the lower end. perhaps i've been too radical when EQing the whole track ?
