Afraid of silence - For those who like Fennesz, Tim Hecker

After almost two months of work with the next track for my coming fourth album (or EP), I have finally finished it.
The name is "Afraid of silence", and is an epic track at 10.24 minutes.
The title means different things to me, personal things. It's these different feelings I've have tried to build up with this track.


For me it can not be shorter. It's so much feelings in it. It's like reading a good book, or watching a movie - you can not put it down or turn it off before you came to the end.
Again, this is what I feel for it. You necessarily don't need to feel the same as I do.

This track is also an Ambient Noise track, just like my previous track "Haunting Wind", that got plenty of good comments in this forum thread:

That doesn't mean that you like this track because you like "Haunting Wind".

Ambient noise soundscapes, with some guitar textures.
This is not for all listeners. It's not "Pop" music.
It's for those who like Fennesz, Tim Hecker, Desormais & maybe some Daniel Menche. For those who like more experimental music, that needs much listening to get the whole of it.
Preferably listen to with headphones.
(...and the crackles and noises should be there, it's ment to be that way )


Unfortunately I have to split it into two parts, because of the limitations of filesize on Hypermusic, Electromancer and Soundclick, where I upload my music.

(I have encoded them as gapless, so at least foobar2000 plays these gapless)

Highly expressive, where the only nit I would have is the splitting of the two parts.

As I said on Haunting Wind, this too is a fine example of sound-design and control. I just loved the ever-present 'analog' noise.

In part2 at 3 mins you take this a bit more up and build a great tension, to release it ever so softly.

Just make sure to give a heads up when the album is done

hi svartling! it made me happy to see your post saying you've finished a new song. i was waiting & hoping for a new track after "haunted wind".

unfortuneatly my winamp did not give me the pleasure of a gapless playback still eventhough this small glitch your song is hypnotic / trance-inducing... this to be ruined by a pop-up that started to make sound!

but i will just listen to it again! though, i would have done that regardless of the pop-up.


*argh* the 2nd time around someone entered my room and started talking to me...

okay, now i am well over half an hour on and listened to it 3 times and i can say that i really enjoyed your track. i am certain that even if there were no distraction the first two times i would have listened to it 3 times anyway.

i love how the song draws you in slowly and takes you on a journey, just flowing & floating along in current of the sounds. it's less threatning or better said, it's less driving than your "haunted wind" but i think "afraid of silence" is better. it's more refined, more subtle, i like that.

on a whole i find your stuff to be inspiring. when i first heard your "haunting wind" it made me work again on ambient music. which i hadn't done in a long while.

i think you will like my ambient pice called "circular evolution" which you can find here, if you haven't already heard it.

anyway, thanks for sharing and i very much look forward to hearing more of your stuff in the hopefully near future!

Actually i was afraid that you wouldn't like this track after the good response i've got with "Haunting Wind".
And i'm sorry for the two parts, but on the finished LP/EP there not gonna be any gap/pause between
With the player foobar2000 there is no gaps.

What synths did you use on this song?

I didn't use any synths at all. I work completly with audio.
First i make some long interesting audio clips in AudioMulch, then i import them to Ableton Live. In Live I timestretch them, and work with filters, envelopes, automation and feedback loops.

I'm going to take a short break for vacation, after that i'm going to start with next track for this LP/EP.
I want to release the LP/EP before the year ends.

hey man, another excellent track, well done. Is it treated/stretched guitar you use in this one, sounds like it to me Guitars are the greatest, such a miriad of amazing tones and frequencies, that all creap out especially when you stretch them.

Really looking forward to hearing a full record when its done, I reckon this track would work even better in amongst others on a full release, giving more variation between tracks and such. My attention span kinda needs a few different textures or hooks to really fully connect completely. But this does work very well on its own.

You are almost right. One of the long audio clips i have used, started as a drone sound made in AudioMulch, that i filtered with distortions and granulars to get a guitar sound. It was ment to sound as guitars.
I have mangled it and granulated it and Time stretched it, to make the sound i want.

I'm also thinks that this kind of music should be listen to in a full release to fully here the thoughts about the composition.
