My machines going bonkers and this is not good!

since evening there have been occasions when the machine would just stall in between sessions... (followed by some soft "TAK TAK" noises from the cabnit).

The reboot would then show the Primary Slave Disk (a Maxtor 40 GB 7200RPM ) as some strange charecter (something like ^H ) .

another reboot would make it ok. ater some time the same thing.

one of the reboots reported an error on the boot page which said something like 'S.M.A.R.T repor no good. Hard disk faliure possible. Backup all data.'

I have the Data backed up. So that is now OK. However another stall during the session forced me to unplug this hard disk (this is not my audio disk.. i use it for Xtras)

The disk is bout 8months old.

Is this a bad harddisk or could it also be a cable error ??? is such covered in the 3years warranty that came along ????

Most likely a bad harddisk.I had these sort of problems 2 years ago with the infamous IBM deskstar drives.
Cable is unlikely, cables just don't go broken by themselves. Nevertheless doesn't harm to test it with a different cable.
It could be your MB and the hardiskcontroller but also not very likely because the other harddisk functions.
I guess it should be covered by warranty but there are catches. Dealership is the major issue. I had some realy weird issues regarding my problems (well known) with the IBM deskstar. I had to reinstall the faulty drive and then run a diagnostic program wich had to prove that the disk was faulty

just spoke to the dealer.. he asked me to format and repartition the hard disk. i fit still shows errors he said he'd replace the diak..

think this cud be a problem that can be solved by formatting ???

No. It's f**ked. Bin it. Never trust your data to anything that's broken once.

Reformat a drive that SMART is saying is in predictive failure? SMART looks for certain conditions on the drive that it thinks the drive will fail within like 72 hours. Just get it replaced, and stop fiddlin'. I wouldn't even play with it.

BTW .. what exactly is smart ???

Just get it replaced, and stop fiddlin'. I wouldn't even play with it.

This is the bain of computer/soft synth systems. I had to replace drives on both of my computers last year.

I suggest you quickly grab a second HD and a copy of Norton Ghost. Replicate your failing drive onto the new disk if possible and then swap them. Hopefully this will prevent a week of installing software and renewing copy protection codes.

Very fortunately.. this was not my boot drive (infact not even my audio drive...) i use this drive almost exclusively for backups and archives. Those i have copied on another hard disk.

Also while we are it.. i recently installed an 80GB WD Hard disk, wich i use for audio. I read later that these disks are not good either.. shoud have done my homework.

Since then, on boot i get this message diplayed on the boot page :

Primary IDE channel no 80 conductor cable installed
secondary IDE channel no 80 conductor cable installed

what does this mean ???

Do not use it!

Its a nightmare to have a drive go, and gets even worse by the size of todays disks. One thing you could check is if its overheating. I had two disks stacked and one was giving errors cos it was getting too hot. It eventually failed on me.

Ah, Are you using the correct ide cable? Anything above udma 100 needs an 80 core cable. The standard was 40.

There are 40 pin/80 conductor cables. They look very different than the old 'standard' IDE cables. They are required to achieve UltraATA speeds. In short, you ain't getting your maximum thorughput with them cables you have on there.

Oh, and BTW, I have 5 IBM "Deathstar" drives that I've been using for over 2 years without issue. These were the exact models that had the problems too.

Not everyone's bad experience means you'll have one too.

Seagate, Western Digital, Fujitsu, Hitachi, and Maxtor are the only drive makers left that I can think of. Research the model you're looking at to see if there are problems with that specific model first, then buy. All drives fail, some sooner than others, but they do eventually go. I personally believe that no single disk maker makes 'crap' drives across the board.
