Hey

I need to get something to connect my iPad Air to my PC (and Macbook) so that I can use Cubase ic Pro with Cubase 8

The only budget solution I've come across is the iRig Midi 2, which I still think is a little pricey for my needs.

Another option is the iConnect Midi interfaces which although more expensive will give me audio pass through as well, but I don't think I need that and I can't use the audio interface part in conjunction with my Fireface on the PC anyway. Not at the same time at least.

Not quite sure why there isn't a single cable solution that simply plugs into the iPad and then your regular midi setup! :?

Apple Camera Connection Kit plus no name USB MIDI interface from Amazon. Total cost around $50.

I looked at that but I utterly refuse to pay £25 for a 6" USB cable.

Also, by the time I've bought a USB/midi interface as well I'm 80% at the price of the iRig, which I bet will perform better.

I'd just buy the iCM2+ myself, they are $90 bucks, but way more features than the iRig.

MIDI via standard SYNC cable is an option now too.
I use this one.

other alternatives :

You might be right, I'd assumed the iCM2 had been superseded by the iCM4

That still doesn't solve the requirement for a physical connection, which is what I'm really pondering.

Edit - Oh wait I see what you mean, so this allows me to use the charging cable.

Not sure how that'll work on a PC, but I can give it a try. Thanks.

I would think you could find any used class compliant pro audio USB interface to work with CCK. 2 in, 2 out plus midi in and out, plus headphone out and in some cases, decent preamps and even 48V phantom power. All kinds of older USB audio interfaces that would probably work. Even my midisport 2x2 works with CCK

Almost forgot a very important point - must have a powered hub for devices and plug the hub into the CCK and all devices into hub. You can use audio/midi interface at the same time as controllers too. They just have to be class compliant.

I have an iRig and no, it doesn't perform any better than my older M-Audio Audiophile interface plugged into a powered hub and hub plugged into CCK.

Best interface is my Venom synth I bought for $179

All the power of the Venom synth, a midi controller keyboard, and a USB audio/midi interface. Will route Venom synth output into ipad too.

I see - physical connection to PC still an issue with Venom synth, but not others mentioned If you use PC connected to primary Hub connection and CCK to hub port.

I bought my iRig to connect the midi out on my hardware sampler to my iPad 2 and let the sampler sequence the sound modules on ipad. It was a simple solution for that, but only had options for midi cable connections there, not USB on my Roland MV8800.

You could buy an Android tablet for less than the cost of the adaptors and use that with Cubase ic Pro.

@ tehlord I use MIDIMittr with a PC and it works great.

It also has an advantage over CCK based solutions by keeping your devices charged whilst in use.
If your PC USB port can't supply enough juice to (actively) charge an iPad, you can also consider using a utility like 'ASUS AI Charger' that boosts the output on supported motherboards :- http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/ai_charger/
(This works for me on a desktop Dell machine.)

I already have a Firewire audio interface in teh RME Fireface 400, I am simply looking for a solution to get a midi signal from iPad to PC

I'm commited to iPad as there will be other audio apps I will be using as well.

MIDIMittr website there is no Windows version yet? :?

If there was, would this use the iPad charging cable to connect to PC via USB?

There you go chief..

http://www.s-r-n.de/midile/windowsfaq.htm

Windows Version is a Beta, but seems to work flawlessly. (read the FAQ though!)
You have to run a small client app on the windows machine, then connect with the iOS App and route stuff from there.
On the PC, the new virtual MIDI ports should show up and you can use them just as regular hardware connections within your system/DAW.

And, yes all those options I listed are using the standard iPad charging cable to connect to the PC.
