Hi folks,

being a drummer I now face a little dillema- I'm playing drum'n'bass and I either need to take acoustic drums and process it through some effects, or I accidentally just found an electronic drumkit from yamaha that just feels right - there you can map anything to any pad (very useful for lots of complex drumming techniques...) and have the real electronic sound. I think despite playing electronic drums needs you to be extremely accurate, I'm capable of doing it.

My dillema is: How about the actual sound? If you play acoustic drums, the sound doesn't go only through the speakers, sound waves are coming from every piece of the "real thing", which makes it sound kind of natural, big, spatial, or something like that... Electronic drums just won't have that. When playing on headphones I thought "yeah, this is really cool! didn't expect that!", but what if it will suck on stage? :D

Any experiences with electronic music played like that?

Electronic drums make it possible to greatly reduce stage volume, which makes setting up monitoring for everything easier and means less mic leakage. That's the biggest benefit IME - vocals sound cleaner than they do with "real" drums. So, if you're part of a larger band, everyone else will benefit. If it's just you and a DJ, then that doesn't really matter.
