Some people are doing it for the art, trying to push the boundaries of a genre. Other people are doing it for the money, because they have no idea of what they would do otherwise. Others do it for the pleasure it gives them, as some kind of stress reliever and/or as a way to express themselves. I do it for the art, to create my own world outside the stressful day job. Nietzsche once told:
God gave us music so that we, first and foremost, will be guided upward by it. All qualities are united in music: it can lift us up, it can be capricious, it can cheer us up and delight us, nay, with its soft, melancholy tunes, it can even break the resistance of the toughest character. Its main purpose, however, is to lead our thoughts upward, so that it elevates us, even deeply moves us. ... Music also provides pleasant entertainment and saves everyone who is interested in it from boredom. All humans who despise it should be considered mindless, animal-like creatures. Ever be this most glorious gift of God my companion on my life's journey, and I can consider myself fortunate to have come to love it. Let us sing out in eternal praise to God who is offering us this beautiful enjoyment.
And you, why do you make music?

It's interesting to see the quote by Nietzsche in his youth as his passion for music did not subside after he denounced his faith at university. He remained philosophical about what music was (go check out the quotes yourself if you want to read them) throughout his life, but the religious aspect disappeared completed.

Personally I make music because it draws me to it more than almost anything else in life. I don't question why, it just does.

Same here. Questioning why I make music would be like questioning why I breathe. There really isn't a choice.
I wish I could sing as well as the voices inside my head...

For me, and many others here, the question might as well be, "why do you breathe?"

It's always been hardwired in me. I can never remember a time in my life when music wasn't a huge part of it. I always took that for granted, and now it's funny to see my kids who, despite my best efforts at influencing them (I have a house full of guitars, keyboards, a baby grand and a dedicated recording studio), do not share that passion. They have many other of their own passions, and they genuinely love music, but they are not driven by a passion to make music.

Looking back, I also recognize the theraputic value of it. Nearly every day of my entire life, from about the age of 8 on, has included a time dedicated to making music. On those rare occasions where I am somewhere where picking up an instrument is not practical, I feel the void. And, despite the thousands that I have spent over the years on gear and GAS, I would argue that it's STILL cheaper than therapy, and twice as effective.

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.
