New update for Korg Gadget!
http://createdigitalmusic.com/2014/09/k ... on-export/
I kind of wish this could be released as some kind of VST/AU plugin environment. It would be a lot of fun to use..

Yeah: It started out looking like a toy -
Now with the updates: wow...the M1 emu is really good, as well as the rest of the add-ons -
and in fairness: the cards include content from the T1 series as well, which makes it kind of a super M1 I guess...
The next add-on will probably be the wavestation stuff - that would be really logical, especially since retronym's tabletop has got arturia's Prophet VS -
maybe Korg will integrate the poly and the MS20 as well as the electribes...
then: audio recording - I believe that I read somewhere that that's in the works as well -
Doesn't really look like a toy anymore -

The iM1 is very good. Too bad it's crippled in both features and sounds inside Gadget.

Aside the fx parts, the limited features makes sens, Darwin is still very Usefull and not as CPU intensive as the previous Modules.BMoore wrote:The iM1 is very good. Too bad it's crippled in both features and sounds inside Gadget.
The ability to create patch inside iM1 to load them inside Darwin may help.

I also have problems getting quite what I want. Aside from Darwin, none of the synths really make it on their own to me. The other day I had to layer Darwin, Dublin and Phoenix just to get a thick synth bass and that is a significant slow down of my usual workflow. I also miss some inserts effect on some gadgets, and would prefer them to be mixer inserts, and better and editable master effects. I could really use some EQs and stereo widening pr. channel. However, the automation options make up for the missing modulation in many cases. You can automate just about any parameter and that works fine for me.
So yes, at this stage it is a little meh, though it is cool looking and fun to play with. Hope they eventually will extend it beyond just being a "gadget" .

in any DAW layering is necessary, I always use 4-5 drum machines/ samplers per rythm, more for DnB, 2-3 synth for bass, ..., no matter what is the tool, layering is the only way to sound decent and it's were Gadget excels, most of the time to layer various gadgets you don't need to waste time with EQing or mixing.

Limited features doesn't make sense at all. Why should that be different in Gadget than any other hosts?9headshydra wrote:Aside the fx parts, the limited features makes sens, Darwin is still very Usefull and not as CPU intensive as the previous Modules.BMoore wrote:The iM1 is very good. Maybe Korg's fundamental philosophy w/Gadget is to create a DAW in a portable, fun, streamlined form, which could mean instead of Korg building an app with a wazoo list of features, they only give you what you'll likely need/that's fun to play with - their idea being that if a project you're working on in Gadget is something you want to expand on/take more seriously, you'll transfer it to Ableton.BMoore wrote:Limited features doesn't make sense at all. Uh, ok. They already buildt the wazoo iM1. No need to cripple it inside Gadget.goldenanalog wrote:Maybe Korg's fundamental philosophy w/Gadget is to create a DAW in a portable, fun, streamlined form, which could mean instead of Korg building an app with a wazoo list of features, they only give you what you'll likely need/that's fun to play with - their idea being that if a project you're working on in Gadget is something you want to expand on/take more seriously, you'll transfer it to Ableton.BMoore wrote:Limited features doesn't make sense at all. Gadget doesn't host other synths as such, it is the synth. Like Stroke Machine, or Caustic, Nanostudio. Unlike BM2, MTS, Cubasis, or even Tabletop. The synths powers of iM1 are doable inside Gagets sound engine (see Kiev and the M1 patches inside it) but the combi mode of iM1...hard to do that and all the other Gadget stuff too...

CPU power is certainly the best reason why they go with an iM1 player called Darwin instead of the full version.BMoore wrote: Uh, ok. They already buildt the wazoo iM1. No need to cripple it inside Gadget.
And like goldenanalog, I think there is an hint with the name Gadget and how korg make a very inspiring app with an excellent workflow.
You can't offer this workflow if you can explore and tweak everything on each module, have dozen pages of paramaters and at the end none pleasing melody made.
Korg gadget is not made for sound design but to find quick ideas. This is where it makes sens to have limited features on each sound modules.

No it is not. Depends on the synths. In Cubasis I can make lots of good stuff with e.g. iSem without further layering.9headshydra wrote:in any DAW layering is necessary,
BTW using EQs is not about compensation for lack of layers to me, but fitting the instruments into the final mix. And there is of course no such thing as "wasting time" mixing.

you misunderstood my point, using EQs is not about compensation for lack of layers, but just a tool to help various sound to be layered.IncarnateX wrote:No it is not. Depends on the synths. and this is where Korg made a great work, because you can lay most sounds from Korg gadget sound generators without the need to EQing them. Wich is a part of its fantastic workflow.

CPU would been an issue in any host. So they should offer only the crippled version to all hosts?! Doesn't make sense.9headshydra wrote:CPU power is certainly the best reason why they go with an iM1 player called Darwin instead of the full version.BMoore wrote: Uh, ok. And the iM1 isn't gear towards sound design either. They should at least include all the sounds.
Having the option of tweaking doesn't change the workflow, if you don't want it to.
