What a pile of nonsense here. I'm unimpressed with Apple lately (I hate their current GUI design and bloaty systems) and I'm particularly interested in seeing their tax evasion put to an end. But "evil"? Give me a break. As other posters have pointed out:

• Apple reversed course on this topic and is going to pay rights holders during the free trial period. Because they can and because the negative PR hurts (sadly not just because it's ethical).

• There are so many far worse corporate entities that are ACTIVELY DESTROYING SOCIETY for their own short term gain and for executives and primary shareholders to become more filthy rich. The pharmaceutical companies are still manufacturing mass shootings and addictions with their SSRI-class drugs, claiming that psych drugs are helping most people (standing on non-science claims to do it, while lobbying for the DSM to consider more normal human behavior as "abnormal" and be medicalized). Monsanto is continuing to abuse consumers, farmers, destroy consumer rights, and even ruin agriculture itself. How about the hospitals for promoting unnecessary genital mutilation in order to continue reaping the billions of dollars they get selling foreskins to biotech companies. How about all those "waste to energy" lies, where NON-renewables are casually renamed "renewable", such as the incinerators that are destroying recyclables (plastics, especially) and poisoning the atmosphere (a local power generator company, currently burning waste coal, is lobbying to raise the legal limits on lead output from its stack, by about 2100%). The combustion industry continuously lobbies against solar panels on citizen's private property...

And on and on and on...

Get a frelling grip on what "evil" is. Apple is pushing us around in the smart phone and computer area, not destroying civilization for a buck and killing humanity.

Ah, I miss Farscape... but back on topic, I agree that Apple's latest iOS interface is a race to the bottom. I suspect that slowly they'll come around and the desktop OS is actually still pretty nice without being totally flat. They need to iron out some other crap as well. I used to hail them as making things that "just worked" where now it seems that too many times things are not working well at all. I can't for the life of me get MIDI over WiFi or Bluetooth working, but that's another story.

I do take issue with "pushing us around." How are they pushing anyone around? They're just trying to make things that people like. I don't feel pushed. Also, think back to pre iPhone smartphones. They sucked. All of them sucked. They were not very smart, and they were crappy phones. Call it what you want, but the iPhone changed everything. The only reason there are any good non Apple phones out there is because they now have someone to copy and compete with. I'll totally get the next generation of iPhone, not because I feel pushed into doing so, but because I've yet to be really let down by one. They're not perfect, but my Apple hater friend has been through phones from every other major manufacturer and all he does is complain about them as well.

P.S. My wife bought me the Apple Watch for my birthday/father's day present and I love it. It's not perfect (No way to set a reminder from the Watch? Really?) but I imagine in time it will become even better. I watched a ton of negative reviews on it, and now that I actually own one I have to say that I think most of them were totally anti-Apple propaganda. I was totally skeptical but now I'm a big fan.

Apple, is a corporation. Look up the definition of corporation. Corporation: entity that exists to make money for shareholders. No more, no less.

Apple are trying to maintain an image of themselves as more than a monstrous money machine. Look at their own web pages:

So they invite us to think of them as something more than "an entity that exist to make money for shareholders". It's a good thing that a high-profile corporation sets itself high targets in other things than moneymaking. It's the public's role to hold hold up a mirror to them, to make them live up to the image they cultivate or expose them as hypocrites, which may come at a cost in terms of bad publicity for the corporation.
