You have to keep in mind the context of the update. DP already has a lot of features that other DAWs don't have, or are 'behind on' as well. Chunks/v-racks are a big one. Sysex/nrpn support is another. 2 Score editors, drum editor, clippings, POLAR, startup items, etc..
While some of these things in the update have been in other hosts, I sit here using DP and wonder why Cubase and Logic don't have anything nearly as good as chunks or POLAR yet.
There are definitely a lot of features that I wish were added, but as a DP8 user, I am very happy with the update.

Understood. I started on Performer many years ago when I was on the Mac, so I get what you're saying. I won't curse DP's existance for what it offers it's user's. Hell, that's why I bought it. I thought for a moment, that I could go back home to DP on the Windows platform. I can't. If I was still on a Mac, then I probably wouldn't be having this conversation. I still do think though, that the update is behind the times.

They better have. DP8 here was, and still is, a PITA. Loads slow, then when I insert an instrument track...crash city. Even Sonar X1 does better...

Generally happy user here. Not sure i'd have called it a major upgrade, versus a .5 update, but oh well.

You might want to give the 9 demo a shot, Barry. VST/PC seems a bit better for me this time around, though i was definitely not having anything like the issues you were.

Otherwise, I suppose it's best for some of you guys to get your rage out here, rather than taking it out on your dogs or whatnot...so, enjoy!

I may try the demo, just to see how slow it loads.

I guess there were not many punters left wanting to shell out $295 to get it, so MOTU included it in DPIX instead

Good thing though is that Win user get a chance to use it too.

it's about time they added automation lanes.. something most DAWs have had for ages.. mute midi notes too.. i think that was in logic v2.7

DAWs already do so much.. short of radical new features and work flow changes what is there to add? plug ins i guess. seems spendy for what is being offered. i'm sure MX4 and the new plugs are nice.. but does anyone need another compressor? who knows.. i'm sure they're all good and useful. i still have issues w/DPs workflow.. there's some things that bug me about how it's organized and which windows do what...

i'll probably sit this update out and see what happens down the road.. if apple screw up logic next go-around that'll help me decide... DAWs are less and less the centerpiece of my software world.. mixing and arranging but seems i don't often start songs in DAWs

ramble ramble.. maybe i'll check out the dp9 demo and see how it feels.. i'm kind of indifferent though..

FWIW, I really, really like the new 1176 comp. I've paid $200+ for other company's modellings of the same hardware, and thus far the FET-76 in DP9 is very good for an 1176 emulation. The Masterworks leveler (la2a) is also excellent, to a fault.

all the Motu processing plugs are good so it's not surprising. i'll have to check the demo of 9 and see how it goes..

I ran DP8 two years ago, and as some stated Windows release needed some work.

Ran DP9 all day now, and it's fine as stability go so far.
Two if my VST Instrument plugins list among effects but found a workaround for that until they fix it - probably in next maintenance release as I was promised.

You can load effect that support midi in slot 2 of instrument tracks.
And the neat thing is that you can select that slot as output from a midi track.
So if that is your plugin issue - it might do as workaround.

Customization is excellent and there are so many things I like that I will probably buy it.
Will run a full size project first and see about performance.
DP fixes a list of 10 feature requests in Sonar - so that would be worth it.

The 'window layout' is very customizable. Check the manual or preferences for more options. There's a lot you can do.

There are also screensets or recallable window layouts as well.

It does seem a bit incredible that they are touting midi learn as a major new feature in a version 9 release. From the images the automation seems to be all straight lines, is that correct? I used to think MX4 looked an interesting synth maybe 8 years ago, but isn't it a bit long in the tooth by todays standards?

The MIDI learn is regardless of whether a plug has MIDI learn. DP has always had MIDI learn for plug ins that support it, now it can learn any plug in regardless of the MIDI learn capabilities of the plug in. This is useful for Chunks, so you can use MIDI to control plug ins etc. and globally have plug ins available to songs, remixes, or themes in a film score etc. It's not at all similar to the MIDI learn in other DAWs in that way, where it's attached to track automation etc.

Automation in DP is very very deep, way more than straight lines, much better than Logic etc.

MX4 is an odd duck, mostly the factory sounds are crap, but I already am excited that it can emulate the crazy squelching filter in my old EMU E6400.

DP is not for everyone. I remember Logic used to get this kind of criticism, but now it's DP.

Mostly I think people overthink the layout and workflow, it's like all DAWs in that one or two things are weird.
In Logic there are two views of the mixer, the Environment and the Mixer window. In DP there are two views of the current Arrangement, Tracks Overview and the Sequence Editor. Mostly you use the Tracks Overview for selecting things zoomed out etc. and the Sequence Editor for editing. Chunks can be mostly ignored if it doesn't fit your workflow, but I think most people would at least benefit from having the ability to jump from a MIDI initial song composition to an audio only mix down in the same open Project.
