I'm looking to add a drive and am leaning towards going to an external drive (see link)

Are internal drives quicker than these?
What are SATA drives. Is a RAID controller needed for internal drives? I have one on my present PC, but since I didn't build the thing, not really sure why it is there. I am planning to use my present PC for Video editing and getting a new DAW, btw.
I would like to have 3 external drives. One for audio, one for Halion, and one for BFD.
I am also running a Motu 828 with firewire, so will these be a problem with all those drives. Would I be better off with two internal drives and tow external. Should I run one firewire and one USB 2

Yes, internal drives are quicker. You're limited by the firewire or USB ports with that external casing. The 'latest' drives are hitting upwards of 60+ megs a second.
SATA is Serial ATA, the future of disk technology that's replacing EIDE. You'll need a SATA controller and sata power connectors it looks like, or some adapters to hook them up though if your mobo and power supply don't support 'em.
RAID is *NOT* needed for audio, and not needed PERIOD for our application. If you really do plan on getting serious into video editing, RAID might help, but again, it's not needed. I've watched guys edit thier video on their laptops before, obviously without RAID.
You want a drive for BFD? Why? It's 9 gigs.
Don't saturate your Firewire bus. Don't stick drives on USB2 either, least I wouldn't.

Hi guys. The add on for BFD that was just released is 22GB, for a total of 30GB now if you include the original BFD material.
I also need to buy another hard drive at this point. Thanks for starting this thread. I am aiming for an external usb one so that I'll be able to swap it from my desktop to laptop ( when I get a better laptop ).
