As far as what type (dark or light) of atmosphere you want to capture, I would go with a little of both(not too dark, nightmares are hard to deal with when you are the parent) I have two cds that were made during planetarium shows, one by Ian Boddy, "Chiasmata" that was recorded live somewheres in Britain (Scottland I believe) that has a bit of both and I don't think it would be inappropriate for young children and another from John Serrie called Stargazers Journey that also has some darker elements. Both have been held at planetariums with great success.
The other thing you could do is work with your son and see what he thinks and maybe let him participate in the recording somehow (how old is he?) and get the kids eye view so to speak.
