@bjporter something for the next KVR OSC! :P

super-early-initial-impressions are good, it sounds nice and you can create some really interesting patches with it; the ui is a real pleasure to use and it's a quite deep synth with many sound-shaping options.

on the other hand, it's kinda cpu-hungry and unstable, and seems to have some weird stuff going on with some parameters, like unison and saturation (oh and it's really easy to send your sounds straight to aliasing hell, btw).

considering it's still in its early days i'd say this will probably shape up to be a great free synth.

Another early impression, have played with it for half an hour to an hour.
Sounds pretty good, I think. Able to create some weird stuff. Cross-mod is always fun.
Not impressed by the standard LP filter. Formant filter sounds good.
Envelopes need work. Negative filter envelope didn't really work as expected...
Great modulation options. The interface for it almost works. When setting modulation amount you'd really want to set a mid-point as well.
Not very stable. Crashed when closing the UI, couldn't recover (= work lost).
Mod wheel won't work.
Installed the supposed 64 bit version but shows up in Reaper as 32 bit.

Verdict: Too early in development to be seriously useful but certainly something to keep my eyes on.
Not OSC-ready but I hope it will be.

Mantra Evo is one of my favorite synths, so for me it is: It can't get better :) sorry

Fails LPX's validation for me:
ERROR: Component Version mismatch: Res Vers = 0x10000, Comp Vers = 0x303
Edit: Testing it out in Hosting AU. There are some graphical flickers/glitches, but otherwise it sounds pretty good actually. Hopefully we'll see some bug fixes / improvements shortly!

Hey, Helm developer here!

First, thanks for all the feedback :)

As most of you have seen, there are some issues (e.g. 64 bit windows is actually a 32 bit build, Meter flickering, AU validation failing, etc.)
Combing all the forums is difficult and time consuming, so when you run into problems it would really help me expedite the fix if you sent me an email at matthewtytel@gmail.com with what system you're on and any other details you think are important. Thanks!

I've also seen some sound complaints. These help as well, so if you don't like how a component sounds, send me an email and I'll tally it up and change the most unpopular ones.

As part of the beta, I'm trying to get some community produced sound patches to distribute with Helm, and sound/song samples to put on the website. If you'd like to contribute anything, I would LOVE that. I'm going to put the author on the website songs with a link to whatever page you like and am probably going to put a spot for patch author inside the synth.

I've also seen some sound complaints. These help as well, so if you don't like how a component sounds, send me an email and I'll tally it up and change the most unpopular ones.

Keep the feedback coming :D

I would actually love to do a sound bank for you but unfortunately I can't get the mod wheel to work and I do a lot of mod wheel modulation with all my patches.

I kind of figured the 64 bit was actually 32 bit when MuLab 64 bit didn't recognize it.

Anyway, I'll send you an email with the issues I have, although I'm sure they're probably the same ones you're going to get from others.

** EDIT ** Email sent.

the preset browser needs a bit work, its a bit hard to click through the presets, maybe a rolldown menu?

@bjporter, i really want that thing in the next OSC! it was really stable here.

crashes ableton 9.2 x86 when loading. somebody else? so his means i cant do a little demo of the 2 presets.

I can't even get the preset browser to work. Totally non functional here.

Post

its a bit sluggish, but it works in cantabile v2 build 2068 32bit.

i also noticed some random cpu spikes, so the code isnot clean right now.
really enjoy this synth approach, once finish you should sell it for some €.

Amazing. I believe that bugs will be polished.
Btw. I work in Linux so i am very happy that your synth is free and its source code can be downloaded. It means a lot for open-source audio scene IMHO (ZynAddSubFX is too much old :)).
So i hope that you wont make Helm closed and commercial like some other suggest

I am really liking the clever modulation system.
The GUI is very clear, too, which helps working fast (I find the arp to be in a strange place, far from the step sequencer and other modulation generators, but it is not a big deal).
I would appreciate an improved browser, where you can see all the presets at once, and rename, copy, paste, delete them, but i understand it is only a beta project so far, so there is room for improvements ;)
The filter could be a bit more beefy (without using the feedback and saturation parameters), but for pads and etheral sounds, it works fine.
It's not rock-stable yet, but once again, quite promising !

apparently MSVCP110.dll is missing from my computer

doesnty show up in Orion/Mulab and doesnt load in MiniHost

32 bit versions all round from .msi file

zyn is actively improved, as is the Yoshimi variant. To paraphrase the muse,
'What's age got to do with it...got to do with it?'
