Good News: Apple allows musicians to opt out of streaming and sell only by download on Itunes

Both Tunecore and CDBaby and Apple, made the decision to allow musicians to opt out streaming and sell only by Download. The only limitation is that if you make the decision to sell by download, all your songs must be sold by download only. That's not a restriction to the independent musician. That's good business. Now, virtually the vast majority of music creators can avoid streaming and sell for a fair price, the product of their work. Streaming only makes sense if you are famous and the streaming companies put a lot of money up front for your songs/album. For all others, it is a failed done deal. It only makes sense for those who get huge royalties up front, and for old music, and for garage hobbyists. Goodbye streaming! Incidentally, anyone can check the balance sheets of the key streaming companies and learn that they are either solidly in the red, financially, or barely treading water. Predictable.

I was listening (streaming) to an album on bandcamp recently, a commercial album available for purchase. I had streamed it maybe...two or three times ? ... then when I went to stream it again I got a pop-up screen telling me it was time to 'put my hands in my pockets' ....
seems like a reasonable compromise to me. I ended up buying it, because I knew from streaming it that it was good and worth a purchase. I haven't tried streaming it again since, so I'm not sure how this system works... if it allows you to stream again after a certain amount of time etc, or unlimited amount of times after purchase.
on the other hand, even if it would give me unlimited streams - I'd have still bought it.
anyway, long story short, the streaming model does suck pretty much for small-medium artists, but it could be good for business if restricted slightly and offered in a preview kind of way.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
