Hey folks. I've been trying to hammer together an Ipad setup for the stage, and my two MIDI controllers aren't getting fully recognized(a Novation Remote SL, and an ancient M-Audio keyboard). They're getting plugged into the USB slot of a Focusrite iDock that the Ipad is mounted to.

Assuming I can't get the Remote working, does anyone have a suggestion for a small, pad & knob oriented controller that has worked for you with Ipad? Have you tried successfully connecting it in through a peripheral device, such as the dock I'm using? Or if you know anything about this kind of situation, I'd be grateful for any extra knowledge.

Check out the Focusrite Tech Specifications: http://us.focusrite.com/ios-audio-inter ... #tech-spec

It's possible the Novation will work but requires power.

I use the Apple Camera Connection through USB with some of my keyboards. If either of your controllers have 5Pin MIDI, I would also recommend trying the MIDI I/O on the Focusrite.

I use the Novation Impulse 61 and it works great with the iDock with USB. The iDock does not have 5 pin midi inputs. It also can work with just the camera connection kit as well.

An update:

In case anyone else has a Novation Remote SL, and an iTrack Dock, here's some useful info. You can get your ReMote SL working normally, without external power, but only if you prep your setup in the right order.

The problem that stops it working right off is Automap(surprise surprise). When you power on the keyboard, it defaults to template #38 or something like that, which utilizes the Automap system, making communication impossible. The trick is to instead be on a standard MIDI, non-Automap template when communication first occurs between the iPad and the keyboard.

In other words, start with the keyboard powered on through your dock, with the iPad disconnected. Switch the ReMote SL's template to something like template #1. THEN plug the iPad into the dock, and start programs. From there on, there's no problem getting every pot and fader working, no external power needed.

However, you might need create a custom MIDI template with Novation's template editor, rather than getting stuck with like a V-Station template. After spending some time doing this, everything's golden for me.

This process might also work with the ReMote SL MkII, and other Automap-using controllers, but that's just speculation on my part.

My second controller, an M-Audio Keystation, an old fashioned, bare-bones piano controller, wasn't working either. I can't fathom why it doesn't. But at least I don't need it now.
