Hmm... some of the strange behaviors I get from some VST/filters would be due to not running my DAW at a higher sample rate or not using their oversampling features, so all my tests so far are invalid. Unless I get overly detailed/opinionated/technical I'm not going to attempt to say one product's filter is better than another. It's easier just to speak of flexibility or how many tones/behaviors you can create. BTW, Dune2 and TheDrop are really nice.

I've not downloaded every recommendation on this thread, but so far no filter screams as much as a certain inspirational analog filter. Edit: And again, it just comes down to waveshaping/resonance clipping, I don't believe there's some special analog thing happening.

Filter Freak isn't bad sounding, but I personally prefer Volcano 2 as far as VST effects go. I prefer many of the different filter types as well as the far deeper modulation system.

Filter Freak isn't bad for a simple filter, but its nothing special either. The other Sound Toys stuff on the other hand is in another league altogether. YMMV.

As far as instrument filters go, Monark is the king IMO. Its squelches and screams are so beautiful

If someone could post a demo of Filter Freak, that would be quite helpful. I can't find one. I don't have iLok.

As for Monark, when you use feedback, you start to get that scream for sure, it's very MS-20 like, but ultimately Monark's filter behavior (using feedback) is a bit messy (which is accurate for some analog filters), which can be desirable at times, but like many other VSTs I've tried it's a "one-scream-pony". I think many VSTs (like Monark) is trying too hard to be analog and at the same time fails to take advantage of being digital (which could allow for more flexibility in behavior).

I have an idea. There are many "screamy" filters, some quite good. (I love the filter on Olga) but... I'd probably be hard pressed to buy a new synth just based on the quality of the screaminess of it's filter. That said, other than Olga, Mpowersynth and Serum's French and German filters come to mind as really being able to scream.

However, what I'd love to see is a software synth with a filter along the lines of the z-plane filters that were included in the E-MU Morpheus. Or, a synth with a filter like the one in U-he's FilterscapeVA, which is really cool, but taken to the next level, maybe with interesting gain staging options and post filter distortion that sounds great. Hell, Urs, can you just release a Filterscape 2? Thanks!

Downloading olga. Edit: Tried it, if I got it to scream correctly I wasn't enjoying it, and because of the interface I'll have to give up.

Yep, I don't expect someone who has a good selection of synths to buy my first product. It would probably take 3 or more big version updates to get to workhorse synth status, but that would be my goal. For someone who is as dissatisfied with VST offerings as me, that will be my first audience.

I'll see about those other VSTs you mentioned.

Serum: French filter very interesting, sounds good! German filter, very smooth, subtle growl, good!
Olga: I give up / I no like (sounds like generic distortion).
MPowerSynth: really bad, volume spikes during sweep, horrible "saturation" sound... unless I didn't find the right knobs..?

Imposcar2 - sounds good, a bit more than a growl, turning up the drive creates a bit of generic clipping which some analog filters have as well, adds a bit of a fuzz, but I'd like the option to remove that while still maintaining the resonance overdrive.

I think I've seen enough VSTs. A lot of them are good for sure, but none of them are as flexible as they could be as far as filters and resonance goes, and that's why I need to make my own.

Edit: Hmm, maybe I should make an audio demo for all the VSTs so we can hear them side by side and have an old fashion shootout. *insert cowboy sound here*... maybe I'll throw in a few analog filters as well.

What is your favorite screamy filter? (from a vst)
